Miami, Florida 33055 Dade: (305) 624-6101. Broward: (305) 763 222 11 406 I would like to nominate myself, Fred N. Joseph, for the board vacancy on the Performing Arts Center Trust. I have enclosed a biographical article which appeared.' in the news magazine for The Grand Condominium. I have been the President of The Grand for the past 2 years. I serve over 2,000 residents, a retail complex and The Doubletree Hotel. In my capacity I oversee ,a budget of over $5,000,000.00 Aside from my business sense, I.would bring to the board the neighborhood link. I know MZ neighborhood, not from read- 406,-. 13 They always say "You can never go home," but Fred Joseph has made a full cir- cle. When his family moved to Miami from North Carolina he was a little boy. Their first residence was on Biscayne Boulevard and 21st Street. Now he is right back in the same neighborhood. He has seen many changes here and the only thing that remains from the old neighborhood is the S & S Diner. Miami has always been home. He has pursued busi- ness in west Dade, reared a family in south Dade, and even moved back to North Carolina to breed and raise horses for eight years. During that time he still came back to Miami every winter. When Fred and his wife Linda decided to come back to Miami to live, he cvas impressed with the potential that the Omni area possessed. After moving into The Grand he was con tent to enjoy the convenient lifestyle that comes with living here. He attended all the Board meetings to keep infonned. That was before "Andrew." After that night in August, The Grand filled up almost overnight and became a small city. Fred Joseph is not a "Sit back and let someone else take care of it" type of person. When he saw the growing pains the condo association was having, he started getting involved. First on the Operations Committee, then the Budget Committee and finally, run- ning for a seat on the Board of Directors. After being elected by the residents, the Board elected him President. He now attends all committee meetings and has been able to bring the knowledge he has gained as a pri- vate business owner to the day-to-day opera- tion of The Grand. He is very involved in all aspects of the condo association and has worked to make this community a harmo- nious blend of retail and residential bliss. He is aware of the integral part the The Grand will play in the revitalization of our neighborhood. He maintains a positive atti- tude regarding the "Omni Shopping Center" because it is not in the best interests of The Grand residents for it to become an empty mall. Mr. Joseph is involved in many local civic interests.. He is always promoting our neigh- borhood and encouraging people to come back downtown. When the city proposed a homeless shelter be built in the area, Mr. Joseph was determined that the needs of The Grand would not be diminished by the desire of the city to give shelter to the homeless. He continues to monitor the shelter situation to ensure that we are not forgotten. He is presently deeply involved in seeing the Performing Arts Center completed for our neighborhood. He is on the Neighborhood Development Committee and has made sure that the interests of the people who live here are not ignored. The design of the Center, by architect Cesear Pelli, is brilliant and was directly influenced by the participation of the people in the neighborhood. The model is on display in the Performing Arts Center Foundation office at 1500 N. Bayshore Drive and Mr. Joseph encourages all the residents to go by and look at the model. The Omni area, our neighborhood, is starting to change and grow. We must con- tinue to reach out to our neighborhood to help it change or we will become an ivory tower with a great view that we never get to venture into. 96- 406 15 r Y . The Omni Community has tried for almost 2 years to become a part of and a help to the Cultural Affairs Council but has always been rebuffed. We have spent so much time and energy appealing to our City and County Commissioners and Managers to intervene in our behalf. Please help end this bickering by making sure Omni gets its' rightful representation in the decision making process, two seats out of 32 on the Performing Arts Board. Two seats will not give our community any unjust power, but will be enough to have a voice and most of all it will stop the constant waste of energies by both sides. i We of Omni want to work together to build Miami as we also have dreams of a better future. Resume Eleanor Kluger is a native to Miami. First home in downtown Miami. She was president of the Dance Society, participated in many campus theatrical, dance performances and activities. Listed in Who's Who on college campuses. Graduated University of Miami School of Education with high marks and a Bachelors of Education degree. Taught in the Dade County School system, Riverside Elementary and Blue Lakes Elementary School. Retired from Education to raise three children but continued to work full time as owner, director and artist of American Gift Corporation along with her husband, Hal Kluger. They began with 5 employees in a small rented office/warehouse in downtown Miami. Today American Gift employs over 85 people and has expanded their warehouse facilities which occupy approximately 3 square Blocks in the heart of Omni. American Gift is now an international company which manufactures, imports, and exports their awn designed gift items and sells them both domestically and internationally. As head of the design department, she has traveled extensively spending a total of four months of each year -in the Orient or Europe, teaching, creating, and supervising people and product development. Eleanor Kluger has always been interested in the promotion of the arts, both as an artist, teacher, and business woman. She has strong ties to downtown having worked in the area for over thirty years and now a resident the past six years. With the positioning of the Performing Arts Center in the Omni area, Eleanor Kluger would be an excellent choice to lead the neighborhood community in support of the Performing Arts Center. She has already shown her support of the project by attending almost every board meeting and many sub -committee meetings these past eighteen months.
