Dear ms. Avalos:
April 15, 1996
The American Legion, Past 162, coconut Grave chapter, has
initiated a memorial Day (May 27, 1996) proposal through our
N.E, T. office, witte the cooperation of varioup Coconut Grove,
religious and business organizations to honor our fallen heroes
who have made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of thin country.
In past years we have Feld Memorial service at the Coconut
Grove, Charles Avenue Cemetery. This year, however, we plan
to implement an annual event that is a much more fitting tribute
to the men and women who gave their all. Planned activities
include: the traditional mOmorial service at tine Coconut Grove
cemetery, a community parade, free food, free educational
materials for the kids, and a military static display at Esther
Armbri.ster. Park (236 Grand Avenue) .
Memorial LDay is not a "West Grave" or "Southeast Grove"
event -- nor should it be. We, as Americaner all share the
fruits of our fallen comrades' sacrifices and mourn their
absence. In keeping with the spirit and honor of this solemn
occasion, we have ask for and received the
partnership/endorsement of the Coconut Grove Chamber of Commerce.
we see this event as a community bridge building effort,
a vision for Miami's future relative to its potential for a
j united community. Therefore, our planned parade routp- takes
i us from Matilda Street (staging area) out to Grand Avenue, then
west to ArMbrister Park.
i We know that this route takes the parade a block into the
