HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-96-0296W 0 J-96-438 5/13/96 s� RESOLUTION NO. 9 6— 2 9r G A RESOLUTION, AUTHORIZING FUNDING FOR THE SPONSORSHIP OF YOUTH CRIME WATCH OF AMERICA, IN THE AMOUNT OF $25,000; ALLOCATING FUNDS THEREFOR FROM THE LAW ENFORCEMENT TRUST FUND, SUCH EXPENDITURE HAVING BEEN CERTIFIED BY THE CHIEF OF POLICE AS COMPLYING WITH FLORIDA STATE STATUTES, CHAPTER 932.7055, AS AMENDED. WHEREAS, Florida State Statutes, Chapter 932.7055, as amended, authorizes the expenditure of forfeiture proceeds for law enforcement and anti -drug education purposes; and WHEREAS, the City of Miami, along with the rest of the nation, has experienced an increase in drug sales, purchases and use; and WHEREAS, Youth Crime Watch of America focuses its efforts on the underlying problems leading to the purchase and use of drugs; and WHEREAS, this year's conference will be held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, reaching approximately 1,300 students, school administrators, teachers, law enforcement officials, and concerned citizens locally and nationally; and WHEREAS, the $25,000 will be used to furnish scholarships to two hundred City of Miami students, as well as police officers, CITY COMMISSION MEETING OF MAY 2 3 1996 Resolution No. 96296 Speakers Honoraria, and to defray overall expenses related to Conference workshops; and WHEREAS, the Chief of Police has recommended adoption of this Resolution and has determined that the proposed expenditure from the Law Enforcement Trust Fund complies with Florida State Statutes, Chapter 932.7055, as amended; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are hereby adopted by reference thereto and incorporated herein as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. Funding for the sponsorship of Youth Crime Watch of America, in the amount of $25,000, is hereby authorized, with funds therefor hereby allocated from the City of Miami Law Enforcement Trust Fund, Project Number and Index Code to be identified by the Chief of Police, such expenditure having been certified by the Chief of Police as complying with Florida State Statutes, Chapter 932.7055, as amended. Funding is to be provided from the Law Enforcement Trust Fund, from a Project Number and Index Code to be later determined by the Chief of Police. BACKGROUND: The Miami Police Department supports the efforts of Youth Crime Watch of America and has agreed to sponsor this year's conference, to be held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel.
