Re: Schooner "Harvey Gamage"
Dear Agenda Clerk:
Please schedule a Personal Appearance at the February Commission .meeting by John H.
Thomas and Capt. Joseph Maggio of The Schooner Heritage of Miami.
The purpose is to request that the City Commission grant courtesy dockage at Miamarina
from March 20, 1996, through April 6, 1996, for the school training schooner "Harvey Gamage."
The schooner intends to dock in Miami for this period during spring break of its ocean
classroom program. The "Harvey Gamage" is a traditional wooden tall ship schooner from Bath,
Maine. The purpose of the ship is to enhance appreciation and knowledge about the history of
sailing ships as well as general education, especially the marine sciences.
While in Miami the schooner will be open to schoolchildren from public and private
schools at no charge. The persons on board are certified teachers who will provide an enriching
experience to those visiting aboard a true historical vessel.
City of Miami employees will be invited to join in a day cruise with students from the
MAST Academy of Dade Public Schools.
In return for a waiver of dockage fees, the ship will provide its tours and one or more day
cruises at no charge. The vessel will not require electrical service, and will dock at the outer
seawall of Miamarina where the tall ships "Bill of Rights" and "Toule Moure" have previously
docked. This will not interefere with dockage of the vessels currently there.
Attached is a letter from the Port Captain for the ship. The City of Miami's welcome to
visiting tall ships serves to add to the character of the waterfront and draw visitors to the marina.

It is with pleasure that we aboard schooner HA.RVEY GAMAGE
anticipate using Miami as a port of call in March and April of
this year. Miami's hospitality is becoming well known to those
of us in the not -for -profit, sea education business. During two
student turn aroun.ds, we ti-vill introduce a number of high
school and college students to the Miami area while gracing the
waterfront with one of the better known "Tall Ships" sailing
today.
Your interest .in the objectives of Challenge, Inc. and support of
HARVEY GAMAGE `s visits to Miami is greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
ron.Mthan B. Smith
