RESOLUTION NO. }
A RESOLUTION URGING THE UNITED STATES
CONGRESS TO RATIFY THE UNITED NATIONS'
CONVENTION ON THE ELIMINATION OF ALL FORMS OF
DISCRIMINATION AGAINST WOMEN; FURTHER,
DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY
OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE HEREIN DESIGNATED
OFFICIALS.
WHEREAS, on December 18, 1979, the United National General
Assembly adopted the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms
of Discrimination Against Women (the "Convention"); and
WHEREAS, in the year 1979, the delegates of the Unite
States to the United Nations signed the Convention; and
WHEREAS, 139 of 185 United Nations member states have
subsequently ratified the Convention; and
WHEREAS, the United States has not, as of this date,
ratified the Convention; and
WHEREAS, ratification of the Convention by the United States
Congress is currently pending before the United States< -Senate
Foreign Relations Committee and the Miami City Commission urges
that ratification of said Convention be given top priority;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY
OF MIAMI, FLORIDA:

Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the
Preamble to this Resolution are hereby adopted by reference
thereto and incorporated herein as if fully set forth in this
Section.
Section 2. The United States Congress is hereby urged to
ratify the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All
Forms of Discrimination Against Women.
Section 3. The City Clerk is hereby directed to transmit
a copy of this Resolution to the Senate Majority Leader, the
Speaker of the House and the Florida delegation to the Congress
of the United States.
Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective
immediately upon its adoption.
PASSED AND ADOPTED this 29th day of February 1996.

Dear Elvi:
The City of Miami Commission on the Status of Women would like
to bring an item before the City Commission at its February
meeting. The item will be a RESOLUTION URGING THE UNITED STATES
CONGRESS TO RATIFY THE UNITED NATIONS' CONVENTION ON THE ELIMINATION
OF ALL FORMS OF DISCRIMINATION AGAINST WOMEN.
I am attaching the Resolution that was passed by the Dade County
Commission at the request of its Commission on the Status of
Women. We would like to have our Legal Counsel Irma Abella
draft a similar Resolution for presentation to the February
Meeting.

Your Commission on the Status of Women proposes that the following Resolution
be written for adoption by the City of Miami Commission at its next meeting.
RESOLUTION URGING THE UNITED STATES CONGRESS TO RATIFY THE UNITED
NATIONS' CONVENTION ON THE ELIMINATION OF ALL FORMS OF DISCRIMINATION
AGAINST WOMEN
WHEREAS, on December 18, 1979, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the
Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women; and
WHEREAS, the delegates of the United States to the United Nations signed the
Convention in 1979; and
WHEREAS, the Convention has subsequently been ratified by 139 out of 185
United Nations Member states; and
WHEREAS, the United States has not yet ratified the Convention; and
WHEREAS, the ratification of the Convention is currently pending before the
United States Senate Foreign Relations Committee;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF MIAMI COMMISSION of MIAMI,
FLORIDA that this Commission urges the United States Congress to act on and
approve the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of .
Discrimination Against Women as a top priority; and this Commission further
directs the City Manager to provide copies of this Resolution to all appropriate
members of the United States Congress and other appropriate officials.

The foregoing resolution was sponsored by Commissioner
Katy Sorenson and was offered by Commissioner
Pedro Reboredo , who moved its adoption. The motion
