HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-96-0108J-96-243 2/29/96 RESOLUTION NO. } A RESOLUTION URGING THE UNITED STATES CONGRESS TO RATIFY THE UNITED NATIONS' CONVENTION ON THE ELIMINATION OF ALL FORMS OF DISCRIMINATION AGAINST WOMEN; FURTHER, DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE HEREIN DESIGNATED OFFICIALS. WHEREAS, on December 18, 1979, the United National General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (the "Convention"); and WHEREAS, in the year 1979, the delegates of the Unite States to the United Nations signed the Convention; and WHEREAS, 139 of 185 United Nations member states have subsequently ratified the Convention; and WHEREAS, the United States has not, as of this date, ratified the Convention; and WHEREAS, ratification of the Convention by the United States Congress is currently pending before the United States< -Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the Miami City Commission urges that ratification of said Convention be given top priority; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: CITY COMMISSION MEETING OF FED 2 9 1996 Revolution No. (� "6- 108 Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are hereby adopted by reference thereto and incorporated herein as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The United States Congress is hereby urged to ratify the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women. Section 3. The City Clerk is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to the Senate Majority Leader, the Speaker of the House and the Florida delegation to the Congress of the United States.
