Program M/1 RECOMMENDATION: It is respectfully recommended that a Resolution authorizing the funding of the Drug Abuse Resistance Education Program, and allocating funds therefor, in an amount not to exceed $25,000.00, be approved. Funding is to be provided from the Law Enforcement Trust Fund, from Project Number 690003. BACKGROUND: The Miami Police Department is committed to the education and development of the youth of our City. The Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) Program is a program where police officers teach a curriculum of sixteen (16) one hour lessons, usually at the fifth or sixth grade level. D.A.R.E. curriculums of different lengths are available for kindergarten through twelve grade level. The lessons provide factual information about drugs, gangs and violence. They teach refusal skills through role playing and other techniques. D.A.R.E. is also a good example of community policing as it uses a proactive approach to stop drug involvement before it starts. Police Officers teaching the D.A.R.E. program are able to interact with faculty, and parents along with serving as positive role models for today's youth. This program reaches over 1,500 students. 97- 795 1 11 • AFFIDAVIT STATE OF FLORIDA: : SS COUNTY OF DADE : Before me this day personally appeared Donald H.
