Resolution Amending
SUBJECT: Resolution No. 97-572
Grants/Simpson Park
REFERENCES: Commission Mtg. 10/14/97
ENCLOSURES:
It is respectfully recommended that the City Commission adopt the attached Resolution
amending Section 2 of Resolution No. 97-572 adopted September 9, 1997.. Said
amendment reflects a change in the amount of grant funding received from the Florida
Department of Environmental Protection from $42,000 to $50,000 for the development of
a wheelchair accessible trail at Simpson Park.
BACKGROUND:
The City of Miami Parks and Recreation Department submitted applications to fund the
design and construction of a wheelchair accessible trail within the unique subtropical
hammock at Simpson Park. Once completed, the project will allow persons in
wheelchairs to visit, enjoy and study one of Florida's unique habitats in the City of
Miami. The project was presented and approved by the City of Miami Department of
Parks and Recreation Americans with Disabilities Advisory Board and the Miami Roads
Neighborhood Civic Association.
Two grants have been awarded for this project. One from the Florida Department of
Environmental Protection under the National Trail Funding Program in the amount of
$42,000. A second in the amount of $58,878, comes from Metropolitan Dade County
Office of ADA Coordination form fine revenues collected by Dade County for the misuse
of specially marked parking spaces for people with disabilities.
Additional monies in the National Trails Program administered by the State Department
of Environmental Protection have become available to the City of Miami for said project;
and the State Department of Environmental Protection has increased the grant award for
said project from $42,000 to $50,000.
It is therefore necessary for the City of Miami Commission to approve the attached
resolution in its entirety in order to implement this important and worthwhile project.
