HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-97-0649J-97-595 08/22/97 RESOLUTION NO. 9 7- 649 A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING FUNDING OF THE "DO THE RIGHT THING" PROGRAM, IN THE AMOUNT OF $165,500.00; ALLOCATING FUNDS THERFOR FROM THE LAW ENFORCEMENT TRUST FUND, PROJECT NO. 690002, SUCH EXPENDITURES HAVING BEEN CERTIFIED BY THE CHIEF OF POLICE AS COMPLYING WITH FLORIDA STATE STATUTES, CHAPTER 932.7055, AS AMENDED. WHEREAS, Florida State Statute 932.7055, as amended, authorizes the expenditure of forfeiture proceeds for law enforcement and anti -drug education purposes not considered normal operating expenses; and WHEREAS, the City of Miami Police Department believes that it is imperative that we give our youth a positive incentive program; and WHEREAS, the "Do The Right Thing" Program strives to reward the youth of this community who demonstrate leadership ability, assist in the struggle against drugs and excel in education; and WHEREAS, this year's program anticipates reaching approximately 18,000 students, and WHEREAS, the private sector is also committed to the success of the program; and WHEREAS, funds to cover this expenditure have not been included in the Police Department's normal operating budget and are available from the Law Enforcement Trust Fund; and CITY COMMISSION ]SHEETING OF SEP 2 3 1997 audutkm rim 9'7- 640 WHEREAS, the Chief of Police has recommended adoption of this Resolution and has certified that the expenditures proposed comply with Florida State Statutes 932.7055, as amended; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the preamble to this Resolution are hereby adopted by reference thereto and incorporated herein as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. Funding of the "Do The Right Thing" Program, in an amount not to exceed $165,500.00, is hereby authorized, with funds therefor hereby allocated from the Law Enforcement Trust Fund, Project Number 690002, such expenditures having been certified by the Chief of Police as complying with Florida State Statutes, Chapter 932.7055, as amended. Section 3. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon adoption. PASSED AND ADOPTED this 23rd day of September , 1997. Proposed Resolution REFERENCES: Do The Right Thing Program ENCLOSURES: It is respectfully recommended that a Resolution authorizing the funding of the "Do The Right Thing" Program, and allocating funds therefor, in an amount not to exceed $165,500.00, be approved. Funding is to be provided from the Law Enforcement Trust Fund, from Project Number 690002. BACKGROUND: The Miami Police Department instituted a program to encourage the youth of our community to "do the right thing." This program rewards youth for being leaders in the community, not using drugs, portraying a positive image and excelling in education. The program also allows children living in high -crime areas to interact with uniformed police officers in non -confrontational settings establishing positive associations and enhancing mutual respect. Since its inception, the "Do The Right Thing" program has grown by attracting a number of influential sponsors. Major sponsors include: Norman Shulevitz Foundation, American Express, Bank Atlantic Foundation, South Florida Impact Fund, The Miami Herald ,WTVJ-NBC 6, Publix Supermarkets, Carnival Cruise Lines, and South Florida Ford Dealers, have been instrumental in the advertising and promotion of the program.
