HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-97-0635J-97-651 9/ 15/97 RESOLUTION NO. 9 7- 635 A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE FUNDING OF THE CRIME PREVENTION PROGRAM, IN AN AMOUNT NOT TO EXCEED $100,000; ALLOCATING FUNDS THEREFOR FROM THE LAW ENFORCEMENT TRUST FUND, PROJECT NO. 690003, SUCH EXPENDITURES HAVING BEEN CERTIFIED BY THE CHIEF OF POLICE AS COMPLYING WITH FLORIDA STATE STATUTES, CHAPTER 932.7055, AS AMENDED WHEREAS, Florida State Statute 932.7055, as amended, authorizes expenditure of forfeiture proceeds,Tor`$w enforcement and anti -drug education purposes not considered normal operating expenses; and WHEREAS, the Police Department encourages the citizens of the community to participate in the detection and prevention of crime; and WHEREAS, the Police Department has supported and anticipates supporting groups participating in the furtherance of education in the area of crime prevention; and WHEREAS, the Police Department must update its equipment continuously in an effort to efficiently combat crime; and WHEREAS, all equipment purchases will still be required to go through the established procurement procedures; and MEETING OF SEP 2 3 1997 Resolution Na 97- 635 WHEREAS, funds to cover .this expenditure have not been included in the Police Department's normal operating budget and are available in the City of Miami Law Enforcement Trust Fund; and WHEREAS, the Chief of Police has recommended adoption of this Resolution and has determined that the expenditures proposed comply with Florida State Statutes 932.7055, as amended; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the preamble to this Resolution are hereby adopted. Section 2. Funding for the Crime Prevention Program, in an amount not to exceed $100,000, is hereby authorized, with funds therefor hereby allocated from the Law Enforcement Trust Fund, Project Number 690003, such expenditure having been certified by the Chief of Police as complying with Florida State Statutes, Chapter 932.7055, as amended. Funding is to be provided from the Law Enforcement Trust Fund, from Project Number 690003. BACKGROUND: The Miami Police Department encourages the citizens of the community to participate in the prevention and detection of crime. For this reason, the Police Department has regularly sponsored and supported such groups as the Citizens Crime Watch, Youth Crime Watch, Model City Crime Prevention, Informed Families of Dade County, Kids for Peace, the Miami Senior High JROTC Parents Association and other organizations devoted to the prevention of crime. In an effort to efficiently combat crime, the Police Department must regularly update its equipment and programs with innovative items and ideas. The Crime Prevention Program has been utilized to purchase state of the art equipment and offer financial support to crime prevention programs not regularly budgeted by the Police Department. 97- 635 1 U • AFFIDAVIT STATE OF FLORIDA- .SS COUNTY OF DADE : Before me this day personally appeared Donald H.
