To the Editor of the Miami Herald:
Re: Selection of Districts for Miami Municipal Elections
I attended only one workshop at City Hall and was very disappointed. For
instance, the Committee appointed (blue ribbon) was integrated mostly with non -city
residents. The neighborhoods were not represented there. Also, I spoke in favor of
leaving the system the way it was. It has functioned for 101 years, if it ain't broken, don't
fix it. The hypocrisy of it all "Love thy neighbor" encompasses the fact that yes love your
neighbor as long as he or she is Cuban or African -American; in addition, that he or she
makes over $100,000.00 a year or that he or she is Haitian or so forth. Any cliche' will do
as long as it fits your agenda. We are all taxpayers and thats the bottom line. If we have
different backgrounds and jobs we all live here in Miami. If something (an ordinance)
affects me, it affects all city residents. I come from Cuba and my neighbors here on
Northwest 26 Street come from different countries such as the following: Honduras,
Haiti, Bahamas, Puerto Rico, El Salvador and the Dominican Republic. Since we have
lived here for so many years, I know their first and last names. My federal, state, county
and school board representatives are black and it does not bother me, since they represent
everybody. My federal Congress women is Carrie P. Meek -District 17 African -American,
State Senator -District 40 is Daryl Jones, African -American, County Commissioner -
District 313r, Barbara Carey is African -American, Dr. Salomon Stinson African -American
represents the school board -District 6 and my state representative -District 113 is
represented by Luis Morse who is Cuban. I am not going to move from my house of
thirty years just on account of that.
With this district reasoning mentality Fidel Castro can come to Miami and be
elected for being a Cuban and not the most qualified candidate; also, look east across
Biscayne Bay to Miami Beach. The city commission is 100% White and no Hispanics or
Blacks. I went there on Wednesday and attended a commission meeting. The people in
the Chambers did not represent a cross section of the community. Why the districts here
in Miami and not there. For my money, I think a good person will represent me better in
any government body than a bad one. There are many examples out there. There are
many well qualified people to represent us all regardless of race or national origin. Lets
follow the history of big cities and immigrant groups: Boston (Irish), Chicago (Polish),
New York (Italians and Jewish), and Miami Beach (Jewish). WHY CHANGE THE
RULES IN THE MIDDLE OF THE GAME NOW WHEN IT IS THE CUBANS
TURN IN MIAMI.

David Lawrence
