HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-97-0413J-97-410 6/9/97 RESOLUTION NO. 9 7 " 413 A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION URGING THE UNITED STATES IMMIGRATION AND NATURALIZATION SERVICE ("INS") TO ABIDE BY ALL PROCEDURES THAT ARE LEGAL AND PROPER WHEN ARRESTING NICARAGUAN INDIVIDUALS; FURTHER URGING THE TRANSFER OF INS DETAINEE PABLO VANEGAS FROM THE PENSACOLA DETENTION CENTER TO THE KROME DETENTION CENTER, SO THAT THE NICARAGUAN LEADERS TAKING PART IN A HUNGER STRIKE WILL END SAID HUNGER STRIKE; FURTHER DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE OFFICIALS DESIGNATED HEREIN. BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The United States Immigration and Naturalization Service is hereby urged to abide by all procedures that are legal and proper when arresting Nicaraguan individuals. Section 2. The United States Immigration and Naturalization Service ("INS") is hereby further urged to transfer INS detainee Pablo Vanegas from the Pensacola Detention Center to the Krome Detention Center so that the Nicaraguan leaders taking part in a hunger will end said hunger strike. Section 3. The City Clerk is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to President Bill Clinton, Vice - President Al Gore, Jr., Speaker of the House of Representatives CITY COMMISSION MEETING OF J U N 0 9 1997 Resolution No. 9'7- 413 Newt Gingrich, United States Senators Connie Mack and Bob Graham, Commissioner of the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service Doris Meisner, and District Director of the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service Walter D. It is my understanding that Mr. Pablo Vanegas, who is mentioned in Section 2 of your resolution, was in fact returned to the Krome Detention Center and has been released from the custody of the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS). I am pleased to se that you have shared this resolution with officials of the INS. Please be advised that the current District Director of the INS in Miami is Robert A. Wallis. In addition, we will ask that Pablo Vanegas be transferred from a Pensacola Detention Center back to the Krome Detention Center, so that Nicaraguan leaders will end their hunger strike. FILE : 91- 413
