RESOLUTION NO. 9 7 " 194
A RESOLUTION EXPRESSING DEEPEST SYMPATHY AND
SINCEREST CONDOLENCES OF THE CITY COMMISSION
ON BEHALF OF THE CITY OF MIAMI AND ITS
CITIZENS TO THE FAMILY AND FRIENDS OF
JAMES A. RYDER, UPON HIS UNTIMELY DEATH.
WHEREAS, James A. Ryder, who recently passed away, leaves
behind an outstanding record as a prominent chief executive
officer and as a community leader; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Ryder's many accomplishments include the
founding of the very successful company, Ryder System, the
founding of Goodwill Industries of Miami, and receiving numerous
honors from the Anti -Defamation League, the Employ -the -
Handicapped Association and the Horatio Alger Award; and
WHEREAS, it is the desire of the City Commission, on behalf
of the City of Miami and its citizens, to express its deepest
sympathy to the family and friends of James A. Ryder;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY
OF MIAMI, FLORIDA:

Section 1. On behalf of the citizens of the City of
Miami, the City Commission hereby conveys to the family and
friends of James A. Ryder, its deepest sympathy and sincerest
condolences, upon his untimely death.
Section 2. This Resolution shall become effective
immediately upon its adoption.
PASSED AND ADOPTED this 27th day of Marrh-, 1997.

Dear Mr. Foeman:
Thank you so much for sending me a copy of the Resolution 97-194 recognizing my
father's achievements.
While we are inclined to focus on his tremendous accomplishment in building Ryder
System from scratch, his other efforts in the community are also significant, which the
Commission included in the resolution.
I had the great opportunity to travel with my father during the late 1940s and 1950s while
he was growing the truck leasing business and what I'll always remember the most is his
way with people, from executives, to truck -washers, to secretaries, to mechanics. A
greasy hand never deterred him and his natural introduction was "Hi, I'm Jim
Ryder ... what's your name?"
Please thank the Mayor and the Commission on behalf of our family and his friends. I have
s•nt about 20 copies to those closest to him.
