City Manager ENCLOSURES:
RECOMMENDATION
It is respectfully requested that the City Commission adopt the attached resolution classifying
surplus office furniture from the City as category "A" surplus stock and donating the same to
twelve (12) non-profit, community agencies located in the City of Miami, as listed in the attached
resolution.
BACKGROUND
City departments and offices which leased space in the Dupont Plaza Office (Dupont) building
were consolidated and moved to the Miami Riverside Building (MRC). As a result of this move,
office furniture and other furnishings not usable in the MRC became surplus. The surplus
furniture was left behind at the Dupont. In addition, Dupont management imposed a deadline of
November 30, 1996, for the City to completely vacate the premises. The City, therefore, had
approximately thirty (30) days to dispose of the surplus. The Dupont also indicated that it would
charge the City the regular lease payment for the entire square footage leased, If the City failed
to remove its personal property by the given deadline.
In compliance with the requirements of Sec. 18-51.4. of the City Code, the surplus furniture was
first offered to other City departments, including fire and police stations, parks, and NET offices.
The majority of the furniture was transferred to these offices over the course of a month. The
remaining surplus was then offered to community -based agencies located within the City of
Miami. Aggressive efforts to transfer the surplus to City departments and community based
organizations, within the required time period, saved the City an estimated $22,853, according
to figures received from the Community Planning Revitalization Department. The twelve (12)
agencies listed in the attached resolution accepted donations of the surplus furniture.
The attached resolution formalizes the donation of the surplus unusable furniture to these
community agencies.
