For the first time, the Haitian community will celebrate their Independence Day, as other communities have done. To carry out and organize the celebration an Executive Committee has been chosen. The activities will take place from the I" through the 4's of January 1998. On the 1 59'' Street will be renamed after Toussaint Louverture, a hero of the Independence war. A parade followed by a gala reception and a distribution of awards will close the cultural activities. From the 2°d through the 0, a fair promoting the best in Haitian art, cuisine and music will be the anchor of the economic activities, which will also promote the creation of a tourist corridor along 2°d avenue in order to revitalize the flagging economy of Little Haiti. Please find enclosed a folder describing in full the activities. The Committee would like to invite members of the Caribbean community to participate in the activities by: ♦ Putting in evidence the cultural aspects of their country by marching in the parade with groups in costumes. ♦ Having booths, which will sell products from their country along the tourist corridor during the fair. It is in this spirit that we invite you to support actively the "Committee for the Celebration of Haitian Independence Day" in its effort to work with others to make this celebration a success. The Independence Day Celebration is sponsored by Operation Green Leaves, a non- profit 5010 3 organization based in Miami, Florida. All donations are tax deductible to the full extent of the law. Please, do not hesitate to contact the Committee at the above address should you need further information and to discuss your participation. Your early response will help us make this event a success. In the name of the Committee and the Haitian Community, we thank you for your anticipated cooperation and support. 7- 872 History of the Independence Toussaint Louverture Picture provided by famous Artist Uirick Jean-Pierre Message by: Carole Demesmin "Let's follow the steps of Haiti's founders o rebuild a better society where Freedom and Justice stand for all" Toussaint L'Ouverture (1739-1803) led the slaves' revolt on the French half of the island of Santo Domingo in 1789. the French were already loosing control of the island when the revolution occured in France. England and Spain took the opportunity to seek control of the colony. By his genius and extraordinary ability Toussaint drove the English and Spanish from the island. Napoleon Bonaparte wanted to recapture the possession for his empire. A French expedition of 25,000 trained soldiers under general Lederc was sent to subdue the island and reestablish the slavery system. Fighting ensued again, with the forces of Toussaint proving victorious. Leclerc decided upon a strategy to trick the blacks into submission. He promised liberty and equality for all if they would cease fighting. Toussaint )accepted the truce only to be arrested, sent to France and emprisonned at Fort de Joux where he died of cold and starvation in 1803. The struggle for liberty continued and with a decisive battle at Vertieres in November 1803, Haiti was determined to become a free and independent nation. The Declaration of Independence was proclaimed on January 1st 1804. Haiti was the first free black republic in the New World. An example which will be followed by Miranda and Bolivar the Liberator in South America. The abolition of slavery will endure President Abraham Lincoln to abolish slavery in the United States in 1862. On this occasion The Haitian communities in Haiti and abroad are pledging their willingness to work together to build a better society where Freedom, Justice and Prosperity will have one meaning for all. W. E. Dubois wrote, "Toussaint Louveture became one of the cause and probably the prime on which led Napoleon to sell Louisiana."
