TO: Mr. Danny Couch
Miami Sports and Exhibition Authority Committee Member
FROM: William E. Clarke, III, Principal
Miami Northwestern Senior High School
SUBJECT: Securing the Orange Bowl for Soul Bowl 197
Miami Northwestern would greatly appreciate your assistance in helping us to secure the
Orange Bowl for our annual Soul Bowl football game. As you well know Miami Jackson
is a long time rival, and this particular event is one of the biggest games of the season.
The game is currently scheduled to be played at Traz Powell Stadium on November 7,
1997. Considering that both teams are in the midst of a winning and exciting season, we
are anticipating a record crowd of approximately 20,000 fans. Traz Powell's maximum
seating capacity, however, is approximately 8,500. Given this scenario we are very much t -
concerned about the safety of spectators and the need to accommodate all fans. k --
This is a rare opportunity for both inner city teams to play a game of this magnitude in
the Orange Bowl. Therefore, we are asking for your assistance in helping us secure this
facility in order to provide a safer and more comfortable environment. Furthermore, we
are aware of the fees associated with renting the Orange Bowl--$5,000 or 10% of gross
receipts and a surcharge of .75/ticket. In an effort to minimize overall game expenses
(stadium rental, police officers, game personnel, etc.) we are also requesting that the
rental and parking fees be waived for this event. If this request is granted, then both inner
city schools' athletic programs will profit.
The 1997 Soul Bowl has the potential to be the best and most exciting one yet. We thank
you in advance for your efforts and assistance in making this annual tradition a successful
one.
