WHF,RF.AS. Padre Felix Vamla, who was born in Cuba in 1788 but raised in St. Augustine. Florida, was named Professor of Philosophy of the Seminary of San Carlos in Havana. Cuba. soon distinguishing himself as a great educator and introducing numerous innovations in teaching and defending the principle of giving women the same education as men. a principle considered strange in those times; and. wHER.E.A.S, after returning to the United States, Father Varela conccntmtc4 his efforts on helping poor minorities living in New York City, foundirig nurseries and orphanages for the children of the poor, organizing the New York Catholic Temperance Association and virtually living in hospitals while caring for cholcm victims during an epidemic in 1832. WHEREAS, Father Varela also founded the first Spanish newspaper in the United States, publishing articles about human rights injustices suffered by minorities, as well as essays on religious tolerance, cooperation between English and Spanish communities, and the importance of education; and, WHEREAS, Father Varela spent his last years in St Augustine, Florida, where he died in 1853. His legacy endures as two foundations nmed in his honor carry out his work in Miami and New York; aed, , WHEREAS, Father Varela dedicated his life to the service of others, especially the young. the sick and the poor and was considered a great defender of liberty; and, WHEREAS, Father Varela was in exemplary priest who led his ministry in New York City for more than 20 years and as a result of his abilities and dedication. was named Vicar General of the New York Diocese; and, WHEREAS, the United States Postal Service, in August will unveil a stamp honoring the life. deeds and great legacy of Father Felix Varela, a great, humane, spiritual Catholic. neat: NOW, THEREFORE, 6E IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND COUNCIL OF THE 3 CITY OF SWEIETWATER, FLOPMA AS FOLLOWS: RESOLUTION N0. w PAGE 2 SECTION 1. That the Mayor and Council also wish to honor the memory and accomplishments of Father Vacate. SECTION 2. That the Mayor be requested to forego using metered stamps on City mail for thm months from Ober I st through December 31 st, 1997 and use instcad the Father Verela October stamp as a tribute to.his life. SECTION 3.
