Mr. Edward Marquez,
City of Miami
444 S.W. 2nd Avenue,
Miami, FL 33130
Dear Mr. Marquez,
Manager
10th Floor
1.3
This letter requests the date of a hearing before the Miami City
Commissioners for the purpose of getting three street names changed
in North Coconut Grove.
Washington Street, which is only six short blocks long (four
normal), meets Andros Avenue which is only one block long. We would
like the name Washington to be dropped by making Andros bend and
become seven blocks long.
Lincoln, next to and parallel to Tiger Tail (named for a Seminole
chief), we would like to see changed to Icha Tiger Tail, meaning
Little Tiger Tail, which would be an appropriate and colorful name.
Jefferson Street we propose be changed or co -designated to Cherokee
or Billy Bowlegs. These. suggested Indian names comply with other
street names in the district and would serve to better identify the
area, already replete with Indian and Caribbean names.
Not one mile south in Coconut Grove are found other roads named
Washington Avenue, Jefferson Street and Lincoln. Also Washington,
Jefferson and Lincoln are best known on Miami Beach.
By the time the hearing comes up, we hope to have a letter from the
Postmaster stating that he would not object to these particular
name changes.
Certainly, no affront is meant toward our founding fathers, but for
the sake of clarity these changes are long overdue.
Thank you kindly for your attention to this letter.
Sincerely,
AWE aA

Dear Ms Alonso,
Please find enclosed a copy of my letter to our City Manager
requesting a hearing toward changing the names of three streets in
North Coconut Grove.
Within the Coconut Grove area there is a duplication of names and
in time the confusion can only get worse. Washington, Jefferson and
Lincoln are duplicated in North and South Coconut Grove. The
problem is worsened by avenues crossing avenues (Tiger Tail Ave.
crosses S.W. 27th Ave. Andros, Abaco and Inagua Avenues run into
27th Avenue.)
We would appreciate your scheduling a hearing in September.
Thank you kindly for your attention to this request.
Sincerely,
Ao A

Dear Ms. Alonso,
I have not received a reply over a requested hearing date with the
Miami Commissioners in re changing the street names of Washington,
Jefferson and Lincoln in North Coconut Grove.
Understandably at the time (August 22nd) the commissioners were
busy with much more important budget and debt problems --to say
nothing of the election on whether or not to abandon the City of
Miami.
However, apparently, the city is still extant. Now that this is
over, we would like. a hearing date. The neighboorhood has
enthusiastically embraced the changes.
By the way, your Director of Public Works, Mr. Kay, spelled your
name "Elvi11 in his memo. Your secretary told me your name was
spelled "Alvi." I apologize if I have misspelled your name. If I
have, please.correct your secretary as well as me.
Many thanks,
Martha Melahn

CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA
INTER -OFFICE MEMORANDUM
TO : Honorable Mayor and
Members of the City Commission
FROM
Edward Mar 7eD
City Manager
DATE OCT 2
SUBJECT Renaming of Coconut Grove
Streets
REFERENCES:
ENCLOSURES:
FILE :
This office has received a letter from Ms. Martha Melahn, 2564 Inagua Avenue, dated
August 1, 1997, concerning a personal appearance to request the renaming of several
streets in North Coconut Grove. We have researched this request and offer the following
recommendation.
unlike a street codesignation, an entire name change of a roadway will affect all legal
documents and official addresses such as letterheads, mailing addresses, mortgage and
insurance documents, titles, deeds, voter registration, income tax documentation and
driver licenses. Numerous government and utility agencies, including postal, water and
sewer service, electric and telephone must adjust their taxing and billing accounts. All
City departments must approve and adjust accounts and records accordingly. Since long
term and historical name recognition of a renamed roadway will be lost and the effect
on the conduct of business and . legal documentation is considerable, hundreds of
property owners will be impacted by this request, the same as if they were moving to a
new address.
This request for a personal appearance is from one individual who does not reside on one
of the streets she wishes to rename. These streets were originally named by the
founding property owners and subdividers of Coconut Grove (1902!) predating its
annexation into the City of Miami and the creation of the City of Miami Beach.
Since many unsuspecting property owners and residents will be affected by these
suggested name changes, this department strongly recommends that, prior to any
presentation to the City Commission, the North/East Coconut Grove N.E.T. Service Center
must contact Ms. Melahn and coordinate this request, including property owner meetings
and petition by the vast majority of homeowners and civic associations.
Renaming of roadways is a very serious matter and without complete concurrence from
all affected Coconut Grove residents, historians and civic associations, legislation should
not be presented to the City Commission. By copy of this memorandum, we are
forwarding all correspondence from Ms. Melahn to the N.E.T. Administrator for proper
handling and coordination of this request with the various civic and homeowner
associations.

City of Miami Commissioners
Miami City Hall
Lady and Gentlemen Commissioners,
I am here to request that the street names: Washington, Jefferson
and Lincoln in North Coconut Grove be changed respectively to
Andros, Cherokee and Icha.Tigertail.
The reason for this change is due to name duplication within the
same postal district which delays all deliveries and complicates
finding an address.
The first element of beauty is unity, and almost all of the
residents on these streets believe their property values will be
increased by association with the area of Indian and Caribbean
street names slightly to the north. Cut off from South Grove by
street closure, this small portion of North Grove quite naturally
identifies with the area to the north and to Abaco, Inagua, Calusa,
etc., that adjoin. By lumping the streets together with similar
names a cohesiveness and unity are gained.
Part of the problem stems from the fact that.Washington Street is
perceived to run parallel to S.W. 27th Avenue, although actually it
runs somewhat diagonally. The same can be said of Jefferson.
Andros is one block long. Washington is only six blocks long. By
allowing Andros to bend we would have a street seven blocks long,
one more easily found on maps.
Tigertail is well-known and by changing Lincoln to Icha Tigertail,
or less popular, Little Tigertail, this street will be more easily
located. Please note the accompanying documents.
Further, within Dade County there are: a Lincoln unspecified, a
Lincoln Street, a Lincoln Avenue, a Lincoln Road, a Lincoln Blvd,
a Lincoln Terrace and a Lincoln Lane. Almost the same can be said
for Washington, except there are three Washington Avenues. Ditto
Jefferson. So these changes --on streets no wider than cow -paths --
hardly reduce respect and admiration for our founding fathers.
The area currently is undergoing considerable up-scalling and home
improvement, and we believe the name changes, long overdue, will
add an aura of interest, uniqueness and character to the area.
Thank you for your consideration.
