As a child, Kobi dreamed of becoming an architect. For him, there were no other career paths to choose. When Kobi's family moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota at age 12, Kobi Karp continued striving to achieve the most comprehensive education in order to best prepare himself for his entrance to the University of Minnesota, Institute of Technology. Kobi was accepted to the University of Minnesota, Institute of Technology in 1981. During his five years at the school, he traveled extensively in Europe, Central America and the Middle East studying the great architectural historical structures, such as ancient temples, cathedrals, mosques and monastaries. Kobi also spent a summer in Alaska during his education. In 1986, Kobi was appointed to the Minnesota Governor's Design Team. Kobi worked as a graduate intern at the prestigious, architectural firm of Cuningham Architects in Minneapolis, Minnesota. While there, he worked under principle, John Cuningham, gaining valuable experience in the architectural field. Kobi graduated with a degree in Architecture and Environmental Design in 1987 from the University of Minnesota, Institute of Technology. In 1988, Kobi took the NCARB registration exam and passed the exam, in full, the very first time. This was a remarkable accomplishment for someone his age. Kobi's first job in Miami was with the firm of Lane Pettigrew Jones in Miami Beach, Florida. He began working as a Project Architect on Caribbean Hospitality Projects such as La Source in Grenada, a Wynham Hotel in St. Lucia and Club Med resorts in the Bahamas and in Mexico. Kobi also worked on several Super Clubs Resorts and a hotel project for the former Prime Minister of Jamaica, Edward Seaga. In 1992, Kobi became a partner which was renamed LPWK and continued his focus in the Resort and Hospitality Industry. He worked on the renovation of nine Club Med resort projects all over the Caribbean and in Copper Mountain, Colorado. During this time, Kobi also passed the NCIDQ and became registered as an Interior Designer. Kobi began working on projects in the Art Deco District of Miami Beach now, known as South Beach. Kobi was a major contributor in the preservation of this historical area. He renovated and designed the interiors of historic hotels, retail and restaurant projects in the area. Kobi was the architect of record for three nationally known projects in historic South Beach, the Limited Express on Collins Avenue, the Official All Star Cafe on Ocean Drive and the Astor Hotel on Washington Avenue. In 1995, Kobi opened a second office in- the Seacoast Towers, which was the largest sale of real estate in the history of Miami Beach. Over a two year time period, Kobi redesigned the interiors of the project and received City of Miami -Beach approval for a thirty-nine story tower and a two-story penthouse addition totaling 450,000 square feet. In 1995, Kobi and his partner dissolved their partnership. Kobi continued operating his firm under the name of LPWK, Miami Beach Inc. In 1997, Kobi felt the identity of the firm needed to evolve thus leading to the birth of Kobi Karp Architecture and Interior Design, Inc. Kobi moved his office to Sunny Isles Beach and began working on a multitude of projects in the rebirth of this new city. Kobi's clients are some of the top developers in Miami today. From a 12-story bayside marina and condominium, to a 40-story resort time-share tower on the ocean, Kobi Karp is working on designing many projects in resort, lifestyle and multi -family residential arena. In addition to local projects, Kobi was awarded the Park Hyatt Hotel project in Roatan, Honduras. He received accolades for his design of this luxury resort from Hyatt Hotel Corporation. This resort promises to be the prototype of future Park Hyatt Resorts. In the area of residential architecture, Kobi designs between one to three homes annually. He has designed homes for notables such as Troy Vincent, a former Miami Dolphins Football Player, to Edna Buchanan, a Pulitzer Prize winning Author and Columnist. His residential designs are distinctive, yet unique to the personalities which will reside in them. Kobi is very active in the local community. He is a member of the American Institute of Architects, American Society of Interior Designers, National Trust for Historic Preservation League and National Counsel for Architectural Registration Board. He is on the Board of the Miami Beach Police Athletic League, and in addition to designing their new building, he has raised thousands of dollars towards their cause. Kobi recently was honored by the American Resort and Development Association with it's prestigious Gold Award for a Hilton Hotel Interior Design project. Also, Kobi was honored with an award for Outstanding Leadership from the Mayor of Sunny Isles for his work on the City Hall and the Police Department. These major accomplishments have not gone unnoticed. The local press has published Kobi consistently throughout the years. The Daily Business Review describes Kobi's reputation as "The Businessman's Architect." Ocean Drive Magazine declares Kobi as a "Talented young man who is taking the architectural world by storm." The Sun Post explains "Karp is a new breed of Miamian, one who is conscious of the environment and wants to enhance his community in the most aesthetic way possible... he brings a youthful and energetic perspective to his designs." On a personal note, Kobi's hobbies include spending as much time with his two year old son, Jordan and his wife of five years, Nancy. Together, they enjoy traveling and water related activities. As Kobi's first decade as a registered Architect comes to a close, he maintains his philosophy that architecture must be related and appeal to the human spirit and the soul. It must use innovative techniques to create a mood with function. His objective is to design interesting, higher quality projects for his clients that will ultimately produce a successful environment and a return on investment. Kobi guides his creativity towards great designs while working within the realities of the business community and maintaining the economic, marketing, and aesthetic goals of his clients. 98--1 15, O F F I C I A L N O M I N A T I O N F 0 R M HISTORIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL PRESERVATION BOARD NAME PERMANENT ADDRESS (STREET, CITY, ZIP C Oft UATION BUSINESS/EMPLOYER BUSINESS ADDRESS (STREET, CITY, ZIP CODE) 14 l f t \ TELEPHONE (HOME) TELEPHONE (BUSINESS) LIST ANY OTHER PROPERTY(IES) LOCATED WITHIN CITY OF MIAMI LIMITS TO WHICH YOU HOLD TITLE THE HISTORIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL PRESERVATION BOARD MUST BE COMPOSED OF THE FOLLOWING POSITIONS.
