HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-98-1099J-98-1135 11/3/98 RESOLUTION NO. 9 8- 10 9 9 A RESOLUTION ACCEPTING A GRANT FROM THE FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF JUVENILE JUSTICE IN THE AMOUNT OF $76,992, FOR THE PURPOSES SPECIFIED HEREIN; AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER TO EXECUTE THE NECESSARY DOCUMENTS, IN A FORM ACCEPTABLE TO THE CITY ATTORNEY, TO ACCEPT SAID GRANT. WHEREAS, the City of Miami has been awarded a grant from the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice, in the amount of $76,992, to operate a new program entitled the Neighbborhood Youth Justice Program in the southwest Coconut Grove area; and WHEREAS, the goal of this program is to reduce juvenile delinquency, targeting youth, ages 10 to 17, who are at risk of delinquency or who are already known to the justice system; and WHEREAS, the program provides a quasi-judicial hearing for youth having committed an offense which is conducted by neighborhood residents trained in the mediation process,; and WHEREAS, at these hearings, also attended by the youth's parent or guardian and the victim, appropriate penalties for the offense are agreed upon by the parties and may include attending after school programs, counseling, making restitution, or doing CITY COIMSSION NOMTING OF NOV 17 1998 Rmolution No. aR-1(199 community service work; and WHEREAS, community service agencies are participating in this effort and will provide after school activities, field trips, counseling and tutoring services; and WHEREAS, no matching funds are required from the city, and all purchases and professional service agreements using funds from this grant shall comply with applicable city code purchasing requirements; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are hereby adopted by reference thereto and incorporated herein as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. A grant from the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice, in the amount of $76,992, to be used for the operation of a new program entitled the Neighborhood Youth Justice Program, is hereby accepted. Section 3. The City Manager is hereby authorizedY to execute the necessary documents, in a form acceptable to the City Attorney, to accept said grant and implement the program. Section 3. BACKGROUND: The City has been awarded a grant from the State in the amount of $76,992 to operate a new program called the Neighborhood Youth Justice Program in the Southwest Coconut Grove area. The purpose of this program is to reduce juvenile delinquency. There is no local match required. The State will provide subsequent year funding based upon availability of funds and successful program evaluation of the first year. DHW/bb 69iu4k
