HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-98-1060J-98-1073 10/9/98 RESOLUTION NO. 9 8 _ 10 6 0 A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING FUNDING OF THE ®DO THE RIGHT THING" PROGRAM, IN AN AMOUNT NOT TO EXCEED $165,500.00; ALLOCATING FUNDS THEREFOR, FROM THE LAW ENFORCEMENT TRUST FUND, PROJECT NUMBERS 690001, 690002, AND 690003, SUCH EXPENDITURES HAVING BEEN CERTIFIED BY THE CHIEF OF POLICE AS COMPLYING WITH FLORIDA STATUTE, SECTION 932.7055, AS AMENDED, AND THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF THE TREASURY'S "GUIDE TO EQUITABLE SHARING." WHEREAS, the Department of the Treasury's "Guide to Equitable Sharing" and Florida Statute, Section 932.7055, as amended, authorize the expenditure of shared cash or proceeds forfeited for law enforcement purposes; and WHEREAS, the City of Miami Police Department believes it is important to give youth positive incentives; and WHEREAS, the "Do The Right Thing" Program ("Program") rewards community youth who demonstrate leadership ability, assist in the struggle against drugs, and excel in education; and WHEREAS, the Program has attracted many corporate sponsors that have advertised and promoted this effort which is anticipated to reach more than 18,000 students this year; and WHEREAS, funds are available from the City of Miami Law CIiT COMMSION =ETLNG OF OCT 2 7 M8 Q Aorolution No. 9 8 - 1 6 Enforcement Trust Fund, Project Numbers 690001, 690002, and 690003; and WHEREAS, the Chief of Police has recommended adoption of this Resolution and has determined that the proposed expenditure complies with Florida Statute, Section 932.7055, as amended, and the U.S. Department of the Treasury's "Guide to Equitable Sharing;" NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the preamble to this Resolution are hereby adopted by reference thereto and incorporated herein as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. Funding of the "Do The Right Thing" Program is hereby authorized in an amount not to exceed $165,500.00, with funds therefor hereby allocated from the City of Miami Law Enforcement Trust Fund, Project Numbers 690001, 690002, and 690003, such expenditures having been certified by the Chief of Police as complying with Florida Statute, Section 932.7055, as amended, and the U.S. Department of the Treasury's "Guide to Equitable Sharing." Section 3. This Resolution shall become effective 2 98-1060 immediately upon adoption and signature of the Mayorll. Funding is available from the Law Enforcement Trust Fund, from Project Numbers 690001, 690002, and 690003. BACKGROUND The Miami Police Department instituted a program to encourage the youth of our community to "do the right thing." This program rewards youth for being leaders in the community, not using drugs, portraying a positive image and excelling in education. The program also allows children living in high -crime areas to interact with uniformed police officers in non -confrontational settings establishing positive associations and enhancing mutual respect. Since its inception, the "Do The Right Thing" program has grown by attracting a number of influential sponsors. Major sponsors include: Norman Shulevitz Foundation, American Express, Bank Atlantic Foundation, British Airways, The Miami Herald ,WTVJ-NBC 6, Publix Supermarkets, Carnival Cruise Lines, Don & Hedy Carlin and Planet Hollywood, have been instrumental in the advertising and promotion of the program.
