BACKGROUND
The Police Department supports the efforts of community groups and programs addressing such
critical issues as substance abuse, crime, domestic violence, prejudice, interracial conflict, poverty,
and many others. The Coconut Grove Playhouse is the largest regional theater in the State of
Florida and maintains a continuous commitment to our community. The Playhouse is located
within the City of Miami and is recognized nationally. Over the past several years, this institution
has demonstrated its commitment to educational programs relating to theater and its influence on
young people.
The Playhouse, in conjunction with the City of Miami and the Miami Police Department, has
produced several plays which dealt with the effects of domestic violence, youth violence, substance
abuse, prejudice, and interracial conflict and the responsibility young people have for the choices
they make and the effects these choices will have on their lives. Cast members, trained in
counseling, follow each presentation with post performance discussions. These plays and others
previously presented by the Playhouse have been seen by over 500,000 students.
