HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-98-0996J-98-1053 (� 10/6/98 RESOLUTION NO. 9 Q V 9 9 6 A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE FUNDING OF THE POLICE ATHLETIC LEAGUE ("PAL") PROGRAM, AND ALLOCATING FUNDS THEREFOR, IN AN AMOUNT NOT TO EXCEED $93,000.00, FROM THE LAW ENFORCEMENT TRUST FUND, PROJECT NOS. 690001, 690002, AND 690003, SUCH EXPENDITURE HAVING BEEN APPROVED BY THE CHIEF OF POLICE AS COMPLYING WITH FLORIDA STATE STATUTES, CHAPTER 932.7055, AS AMENDED, AND THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE "GUIDE TO EQUITABLE SHARING". WHEREAS, Florida State Statute 932.7055, as amended, and the U.S. Department of Justice "Guide to Equitable Sharing", authorize the expenditure of forfeiture proceeds for law enforcement and anti -drug education purposes not considered normal operating expenses; and WHEREAS, the City of Miami Police Department continues to be committed to the education and development of the youth of our community; and WHEREAS, the Police Athletic League ("PAL") will provide the youth of the City of Miami a positive alternative to drugs and crimes; and WHEREAS, PAL will foster a keener sense of understanding between the youth and law enforcement through positive ATTACHMENT (5) CONTAINED :G'ITT cQIwI olff Nam"MG OF OCT 13 1998 Rawlutim No. 98- 996 interactions; and WHEREAS, the Chief of Police has recommended adoption of this Resolution and has determined that the expenditures proposed comply with Florida State Statutes 932.7055, as amended; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are hereby adopted by reference thereto and incorporated herein as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The funding to the Police Athletic League ("PAL") is hereby authorized, with funds therefor, in an amount not to exceed $93,000.00, hereby allocated from the Law Enforcement Trust Fund, Project Numbers 690001, 690002, 690003, such expenditure having been approved by the Chief of Police as complying with Florida Chapter 932.7055, as amended, and the U.S. Department of Justice "Guide to Equitable Sharing". Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective - 2 - 98-- 996 immediately upon its adoption and signature of the Mayor.1/ PASSED AND ADOPTED thisl3th day of October 1998. Warshaw City Manager RECOMMENDATION SUBJECT: Proposed Resolution REFERENCES: Police Athletic League ENCLOSURES: It is respectfully recommended that the City Commission adopt the attached Resolution authorizing a contribution to the Police Athletic League ("PAL"), in an amount not to exceed $93,000.00. Funding is to be provided from the Law Enforcement Trust Fund, Project Nos. 690001, 690002, and 690003. BACKGROUND The Miami Police Department is committed to the education and development of the youth of our City. The Police Athletic League ("PAL") provides a well known and identifiable avenue to reach them through programs, such as the boxing program and the soccer program, along with future youth programs. The program will give the youth of our City an alternative to crime and drugs. It will also help foster good attitudes towards the law enforcement community as police officers are involved in positive interactions with them.
