HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-98-0910J-98-944 9/16/98 RESOLUTION NO.y 8 — 910 A RESOLUTION CLASSIFYING ONE (1) SUNKEN BARGE LOCATED AT THE MIAMI MARINE STADIUM AS CATEGORY "A" SURPLUS STOCK; FURTHER DONATING SAME TO ATLANTIC GAMEFISH FOUNDATION, A NOT -FOR -PROFIT ORGANIZATION FOR RELOCATION AND USE AS AN ARTIFICIAL REEF; AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER TO EXECUTE THE APPROPRIATE RELEASE DOCUMENTS FOR THIS PURPOSE. WHEREAS, the City of Miami is owner of a sunken barge situated directly across from the Miami Marine Stadium; and WHEREAS, said barge is unsuitable for City use and has been declared surplus by the Chief Procurement Officer; and WHEREAS, the barge also poses a liability to the City in the event of a hurricane; and WHEREAS, the Atlantic Gamefish Foundation, a not -for -profit organization, ("Atlantic") is willing to raise, relocate and sink the barge for use as an artificial reef; and WHEREAS, Atlantic will be responsible for all costs associated with the endeavor; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are hereby adopted by reference comamon M(; OF SEP 2 8 1998 9 luo� 0 thereto and incorporated herein as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. One (1) sunken barge located at the Miami Marine Stadium is hereby classified as Category °A" surplus stock and donated to the Atlantic Gamefish Foundation, a not -for -profit organization, for relocation and use as an artificial reef. Section 3. The City Manager is hereby authorized to execute the appropriate release documents for this purpose. Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption and signature of the Mayor.11 PASSED AND ADOPTED this 28th day of September , 1998. BACKGROUND The City is owner of the barge located directly across the Miami Marine Stadium. This barge was used for events such as concerts when the Miami Marine Stadium was operational. This barge has become unsuitable for City use and has been declared surplus by the Chief Procurement Officer. Today the barge has sunk and its poses a liability to the City in the event of a hurricane. Atlantic Gamefish Foundation, a not for profit organization, ("Atlantic") is interested in turning this sunken barge into an artificial reef that will be used by South Florida divers and fishermen. Atlantic will supply the resources necessary to raise the barge, tow it out to its new destination and re -sink it. Atlantic will further remove the aluminum framing from the barge and place it within the Miami Marine Stadium for the City's future use or disposition. The attached resolution formalizes the donation of the surplus barge to the Atlantic Gamefish Foundation.
