FROM: DO a d 7. wars aw REFERENCES: Youth of America, Inc. City Manager ENCLOSURES: RECOMMENDATION: It is respectfully recommended that a Resolution authorizing funding, in the amount of $15,000.00, for Youth of America, Inc. be approved. Funding is to be provided from the Law Enforcement Trust Fund, Project Numbers 690001, 690002 and 690003. BACKGROUND: The Miami Police Department supports organizations like Youth of America. This organization works with underprivileged children who are mostly without supervision and positive role models. To compensate for this void in the children's lives, this organization uses adult volunteers to interact with them. The volunteers provide counseling in matters concerning drug/alcohol abuse, crime prevention information, tutoring in school assignments, and guidance on matters of family, good health and hygiene. The children receive tangible incentives, encouragement and positive reinforcement to assist them in coping in spite of adverse social and economic conditions. Regretfully, when LETF funding of this program was approved by the City Commission on September 23, 1997, sufficient funds were not available to provide the organization with the $30,000.00 requested. Therefore, the City Commission authorized funding in the amount of $15,000.00 with the understanding that, upon the availability of funds, legislation would be brought before you authorizing additional funding.
