RESOLUTION NO. 9 8 - 613
A RESOLUTION CODESIGNATING SOUTHWEST 9TH
AVENUE, FROM SOUTHWEST 2ND STREET TO
NORTHWEST 2ND STREET, MIAMI, FLORIDA, AS
"FERNANDO SOTO-HERNANDEZ AVENUE"; FURTHER
DIRECTING THE CITY MANAGER TO INSTRUCT THE
DIRECTOR OF THE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS TO
TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE HEREIN
DESIGNATED OFFICES.
WHEREAS, the Little Havana community admires and respects Fernando
Soto -Hernandez, pharmaceutical professional; and
WHEREAS, Fernando Soto -Hernandez was held in the highest esteem by all
who knew him for his dedication to improving opportunities for other immigrant
professionals; and
WHEREAS, Fernando Soto -Hernandez sponsored events that assisted the
Confederation of Cuban University Professionals in Exile to develop programs to
benefit the community; and
WHEREAS, Ordinance 10761, adopted July 12, 1990, created the Miami'
Street Codesignation Committee and entrusted said committee with the
responsibility of reviewing street codesignation requests and making

recommendations to the City Commission as to whether a street should be
codesignated or a marker or plaza should be designated; and
WHEREAS, pursuant to the City Commission's directive, the Miami Street
Codesignation Review Committee, at its meeting of April 20, 1998, reviewed the
Administration's proposal for a street codesignation for "Fernando Soto -Hernandez
Avenue" subject to the conditions set forth by the Committee at that meeting; and
WHEREAS, the Miami Street Codesignation Review Committee at its meeting
of April 20, 1998, recommended the codesignation of Southwest 9th Avenue, from
Southwest 2nd Street to Northwest 2nd Street, Miami, Florida, as "Fernando
Soto -Hernandez Avenue" and further recommended implementation of said proposal
subject to the conditions set forth by the Committee at said meeting;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY
OF MIAMI, FLORIDA:
Section 1. The recitals and findings set forth in the Preamble to this
resolution are hereby adopted by reference thereto and incorporated herein as if
fully set forth in this Section.
Section 2. The Miami City Commission hereby codesignates Southwest
9th Avenue, from Southwest 2nd Street to Northwest 2nd Street, as "Fernando
Soto -Hernandez Avenue".
Section 3. The City Manager is hereby directed to instruct the Director of
Public Works to transmit a copy of this resolution to the Police, Fire -Rescue, General

Services Administration and Solid Waste Departments, Miami -Dade County Public
Works Department and the United States Postal Service.
Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its
adoption.

The Department of Public Works and the City of Miami Street Codesignation Committee
recommend that the City of Miami Commission adopt the attached Resolution authorizing the
codesignation of SW 9th Avenue from SW 2nd Street to NW 2nd Street as "Fernando Soto -
Hernandez Avenue".
BACKGROUND
Mr. Fernando Soto -Hernandez was a distinguished physician who served as consultant
pharmacist for the State of Florida in 1978. From his -strong background and influence in the
pharmaceutical industry he was able to assist other immigrant pharmacists to integrate into the
profession. He was active in the Committee for Continuing Education for Pharmacists in the State
of Florida and was a representative for the Board of Pharmacy for the State of Florida. .
