HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-98-0436J-98-483 4/28/98 RESOLUTION NO. 4 3 f A RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA, URGING THE UNITED STATES COAST GUARD TO MAINTAIN THE EAST BASCULE BRIDGE ON THE VENETIAN CAUSEWAY IN A CLOSED POSITION IN THE INTERESTS OF PUBLIC HEALTH, SAFETY, AND WELFARE UNTIL THE WEST BASCULE BRIDGE ON THE VENETIAN CAUSEWAY IS COMPLETED AND OPERABLE. WHEREAS, the Venetian Causeway in Miami, Florida, is currently under renovation; and WHEREAS, the only access to and from the Venetian Islands is now via a temporary bridge located at the east end of the causeway across the Miami Beach channel as the west bascule bridge is presently closed due to the renovation project; and WHEREAS, the United States Coast Guard's policy will allow the opening of the new east bascule bridge on the Venetian Causeway to boat traffic even though the west bascule bridge is still under renovation; and WHEREAS, during those times when the east bascule bridge would be opened pursuant to Coast Guard policy, the residents of the Venetian Islands would be stranded up to ten minutes during the raising and lowering of the span to allow boat traffic to clear; and WHEREAS, should an accident or other emergency occur on the east bascule bridge or should the bridge become stuck in the open position, two-way traffic flow would be stopped for an indeterminate period severely impacting the health, safety and welfare of those persons exiting or entering the islands; CITY COMCSS1OJR MEETING or APR 2 8 1998 Resolution 1V2. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are hereby adopted by reference thereto and incorporated herein as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The Mayor and City Commission of the City of Miami, Florida, hereby urge the United States Coast Guard to maintain the east bascule bridge on the Venetian Causeway in a closed position in the interests of public health, safety, and welfare until the west bascule bridge on the Venetian Causeway is completed and operable. Section 3. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption. PASSED AND ADOPTED this28th day of April 1998.
