HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-98-0406J-98-480 4/27/98 RESOLUTION NO. 9 0— 406 A RESOLUTION ESTABLISHING A CITY COMMISSION POLICY GOVERNING THE DONATION OF RETIRED POLICE SERVICE DOGS PREVIOUSLY ISSUED FOR INDIVIDUAL USE BY SWORN PERSONNEL OF THE MIAMI POLICE DEPARTMENT IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE HEREIN ENUMERATED STANDARDS AND CRITERIA TO BE FOLLOWED IN REGARD TO SUCH DONATION; FURTHER, CATEGORIZING ALL SAID POLICE SERVICE DOGS AS CATEGORY A SURPLUS STOCK, PURSUANT TO SECTION 18.75 OF THE CODE OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA, AS AMENDED. BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. A policy concerning the donation by the City of police service dogs previously issued for individual use by sworn personnel of the Miami Police Department is hereby established, which policy supersedes any administrative policy in conflict with the herein policy. Section 2. The purpose of the herein policy is to recognize meritorious service to the citizenry of the City of Miami by police officers of the City who have dedicated a substantial portion of their time caring, training, housing and maintaining the overall good health and physical ability of their canine and, thus, in helping to maintain the good order of society within the City. Section 3. In order to improve the morale of sworn police personnel and thereby contribute to community -wide progress, the City Manager shall implement the following policy: "Henceforth, subject to applicable law and with the concurrence of the Chief Procurement Officer, police service dogs which have been issued to sworn personnel of the Police Department for their individual use are to be made available as a donation at no cost to such personnel on the date of retirement of said canine." Section 4. The City Commission hereby categorizes all said above police service dogs as Category "A" stock, pursuant to Section 18.75„ of the Code of the City of Miami, as amended. Section 5. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption. PASSED AND ADOPTED this 2 8 th day of April , 1998. BACKGROUND The Department of Police is requesting that the City Commission establish a policy whereby previous police service dogs can be donated to sworn personnel of the Miami Police Department. The purpose of this policy is to recognize meritorious service to the citizenry of the City of Miami by police officers of the City who have dedicated a substantial portion of their time in training, caring, housing and maintaining the overall good health and physical ability of said canine and, thus, in helping to maintain the good order of society within the City. Therefore, at such time that the police service dog is set to retire said officer will be given the opportunity to request the donation of said canine. JGP:DHWamr c: Donald H.
