HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-98-0340J-98-350 3/18/98 RESOLUTION NO. 9 8- 340 A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE FUNDING OF THE LITTLE HAVANA COMMUNITY T.E.A.M., INC., IN THE AMOUNT OF $15,000; ALLOCATING FUNDS THEREFOR FROM THE LAW ENFORCEMENT TRUST FUND, ACCOUNT CODE NO. 690003.291230.6.940, SUCH EXPENDITURE HAVING BEEN CERTIFIED BY THE CHIEF OF POLICE AS COMPLYING WITH THE U. S. DEPARTMENT OF TREASURY'S "GUIDE TO EQUITABLE SHARING." WHEREAS, the U.S. Department of Treasury's "Guide to Equitable Sharing" authorizes the expenditure of shared cash or proceeds for law enforcement purposes; and WHEREAS, the Police Department believes it is imperative that we contribute to our youth's development through positive incentive programs; and WHEREAS, the Little Havana Community T.E.A.M., Inc., targets at -risk students through its Rising S.T.A.R.S. (Standing Tall And Remaining in School) clubs; and WHEREAS, the goal of the Little Havana Community T.E.A.M., Inc., is to reduce poverty and help low income families become self sufficient, raise the educational level of children and adults, and improve the self-esteem and worth of children and adults in the Little Havana area; and WHEREAS, the Rising S.T.A.R.S. clubs provide field trips and other activities as an incentive to the youths to attend school and improve their conduct and grades; and CITY COMMISS�+Ol� MEETMG Or APR 14W8 ReeobAim .h" 98- 340 WHEREAS, funds to cover this expenditure have not been included in the Police Department's normal operating budget and are available in the City of Miami Law Enforcement Trust Fund; and WHEREAS, the Chief of Police has recommended adoption of this Resolution and has certified that the expenditures comply with the U. S. Department of Treasury's "Guide to Equitable Sharing;" NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the preamble to this Resolution are hereby adopted by reference thereto and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. Funding for the Little Havana Community T.E.A.M., Inc., in the amount of $15,000, is hereby authorized, with funds therefor hereby allocated from the Law Enforcement Trust Fund, Account Code No. 690003.291230.6.940, such expenditure having been certified by the Chief of Police as complying with the U.S. Department of Treasury's "Guide to Equitable Sharing." RECOMMENDATION It is respectfully recommended that the City Commission adopt the attached Resolution authorizing funding, in the amount of $15,000.00, for Little Havana Community T.E.A.M., Inc. Funding is to be provided from the Law Enforcement Trust Fund, Account Code No. 690003.291230.6.640. BACKGROUND The Miami Police Department supports organizations such as Little Havana Community T.E.A.M., Inc. The Little Havana Community T.E.A.M., Inc.'s, main focus is to reduce crime among our youths by targeting underprivileged at -risk students who want to turn their lives around. This contribution will be used to implement new clubs that will unite the schools, police and business community. Their goal is to reduce poverty and help low income families become self-sufficient, raise educational level of children and adults, and help improve the self esteem and worth of children and adults in the Little Havana area. The Little Havana Community T.E.A.M., Inc., through its Rising S.T.A.R.S. (Standing Tall And Remaining in School) clubs offers field trips and other activities as an incentive for the youths to come to school and improve their conduct and grades. A n J.
