HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-98-0172J-98-184 2/10/98 RESOLUTION NO. 9 8 — 172 A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE PLACEMENT OF A MONUMENT ON THE MEDIAN ON SOUTHWEST 13TH AVENUE AT APPROXIMATELY SOUTHWEST 10TH STREET, MIAMI, FLORIDA, IN HONOR OF THOSE INDIVIDUALS IMPRISONED AFTER THE 1961 BAY OF PIGS INVASION, CONDITIONED UPON THE PROPONENTS ASSUMING ALL COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH THE ACQUISITION, INSTALLATION AND SUBSEQUENT MAINTENANCE OF SAID MONUMENT. WHEREAS, the City of Miami wishes to honor the rich heritage of the United States and its history of nurturing freedom throughout the world and the memory of those brave individuals who, in their attempt to liberate Cuba from the tyranny of Communism, were imprisoned after their participation in the 1961 Bay of Pigs Invasion; and WHEREAS, the City of Miami wishes to join the Cuban exile community and the proponents of this monument, the group "Comite de Accion Politica de Ex-Presas y Ex-Presos Cubanos Independientes," in supporting the placement of a monument on the median of Southwest 13th Avenue, at approximately Southwest loth Street, across the street from "La Casa de los Presos;" and WHEREAS, said monument shall consist of three granite tablets, the height of which shall be ten inches in the back sloping to four inches in the front, providing for a slanted view CM rl Qaf�O� STING OF, FEB, 1 n 1998 Rmiudon Na 98- 172 of the inscribed names of the 300 individuals imprisoned as a result of their participation in the Bay of Pigs Invasion; and WHEREAS, the Department of Public Works has no objection to the placement of said monument; and NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are hereby adopted by reference thereto and incorporated herein as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The City of Miami hereby authorizes the placement of a monument honoring those individuals imprisoned as a result of the Bay of Pigs Invasion, on the median of Southwest 13th Avenue near Southwest loth Street, Miami, Florida. Section 3. This authorization is conditioned upon the proponents of the monument, the group "Comite de Accion Politica de Ex-Presas y Ex-Presos Cubanos Independientes," assuming all costs associated with the acquisition, installation and maintenance of said monument. Section 4. The City Manager is hereby directed to instruct the Director of Public Works to facilitate the placement of said monument. Section 5.
