My address to the Commission will be to request that they insure the protection of the buildings in what is now called the "Dinner Key Boat Yard" before they force present tenants to leave. Whether we feel that present tenants are "good guys" or "bad guys" their presence has protected the buildings from total destruction. Should there be any question in the mind of a Commissioner, he should visit the Marine Stadium to observe the damage done by our fellow man. From a distance one can see the graffiti, up close the water fountains have been all destroyed, windows broken and doors torn off. The copper wire has been pulled out. All this while the structure was under the protection of the City's administration. The Bobby Maduro Stadium has met a similar fate under the same conditions. Enclosed is an article from the Herald describing it's fate. The Boat Yard belongs to the taxpayers of this City, and posting one minimum wage security guard there from midnight; to eight, as is presently proposed doesn't even come close to protection. Elvi, please call me at 305-856-6373 with an expected time, and of course to answer any questions. Sincer y, - John A. City Manager SUBJECT: Personal Appearance City Commission Meeting John Brennan FROM: G/ G REFERENCES: Christina P. Abrams, Director ENCLOSURES: #324 Conferences, Conventions & Public Facilities The following is in response to Mr. Brennan's request for a personal appearance at the City Commission meeting in early November. There is a court ordered stipulated settlement agreement between the City of Miami and several tenants in Dinner Key Boatyard to vacate the property by November 1, 1998. The City cannot violate this agreement without risking further litigation. You may recall that this settlement is a result of a lawsuit filed by several of the tenants over one year ago to avoid eviction. Further, there are four tenants who will remain on the property until February 28, 1999. These tenants did not participate in the lawsuit and instead signed an agreement with the City to vacate upon the City's request. In response to Mr. Brennan's concerns regarding security, the property has a security guard assigned from 6:00 pm to 7:00 am, seven days a week. Please advise if you require additional information. 98-1110
