FLORIDA INTER -OFFICE MEMORANDUM TO "Willy" DATE: ,+UN 0 11999 F', The Honorable Wifreda Willy Gort Commissioner SUBJECT Curtis Park Sports Complex and Track FROM, REFERENCES City Manager's (DonAa.Wiarshaw ' ENCLOSURES Tickler #2809 City Manager The following is our response to the three major issues contained in your May 20, 1999 memorandum concerning the Curtis Parks Sports Complex track. 1) Repairs to the slab of concrete containing the late Florence Griffith-Jovner's footprint, signature and date. Upon close examination, we discovered a hairline crack through the middle of the slab and that one of the corners was broken. We are in the process of repairing the corner damage. However, the small hairline crack through the middle of the slab is very delicate and cannot be repaired. We will attempt to secure the slab as best as possible to prevent further damage to it. 2) Naming of the track after the late Florence Griffith -Joyner. We believe that it would be an excellent idea to name this track after the late Florence Griffith -Joyner. Certainly, she will always have a spiritual connection to the City of Miami since she participated in the dedication of this track. It would be our recommendation that the proposed name change be scheduled as a public hearing item at a time certain on an upcoming City Commission agenda in order to provide the public with an opportunity to comment. Please advise us of the time and date you would like this public hearing to take place so that we can schedule. 3. Building up the commemorative slab of concrete and nossibiv erectina a statue in memory of Florence Griffith -Joyner. The existing commemorative slab cannot be moved or built up because of the delicate crack through the middle of the slab. As to erecting a statue, we feel it would be most appropriate. However, as you know, the City typically does not provide funding for the construction of monuments or statues. Perhaps a fundraising effort can be initiated for this purpose. I have requested that Parks and Recreation Department Director Alberto Ruder provide you with any assistance you deem necessary regarding this endeavor.
