HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-99-0595J-99-703 8/2/99 RESOLUTION NO. 9 9_ 5 9 5 A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION DIRECTING THE CITY ATTORNEY TO PREPARE AN AMENDMENT TO THE CHARTER OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA, AS AMENDED, FOR CONSIDERATION AT A REFERENDUM SPECIAL ELECTION TO BE HELD ON NOVEMBER 2, 1999, THEREBY PROPOSING AMENDMENTS TO ALL RELEVANT SECTIONS OF THE CITY CHARTER, AS NECESSARY, TO EFFECTUATE THAT THE MAYOR AND EACH CITY COMMISSIONER SHALL NOT SERVE MORE THAN TWO (2) CONSECUTIVE FULL TERMS IN OFFICE. WHEREAS, it is the intent and desire of the City Commission to initiate a change in the City of Miami's existing Charter that, upon the approval of the electorate, that the terms of office for the Mayor and Commissioners shall be limited to no more than two (2) consecutive full terms; and WHEREAS, the City Commission, after careful consideration of this matter, deems it desirable and in the best interest of the general welfare of the City of Miami and its inhabitants to adopt this Resolution and advocate this matter as hereinafter set forth; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY AUG U 2 1999 Resolution No. OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are hereby adopted by reference thereto and incorporated herein as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The City Attorney is. hereby directed to. prepare an amendment to the Charter of the City of Miami, Florida, as amended, for consideration at a referendum special election to be held on November 2, 1999, thereby proposing amendments to all relevant sections of the City Charter, as necessary, to effectuate that the mayor and City Commissioners shall not serve more than two (2) consecutive full terms in office. Section 3. This Resolution shall become effective 2 - 99- 5�� immediately upon its.adoption and signature of the Mayor'/ PASSED AND ADOPTED this 2nd day of August , 1999.
