RECOMIMEDATION
It is respectfully recommended that the City Commission adopt the attached Resolution
authorizing funding, in the amount of $99,138, for the continuation of the Gang Reduction
Activities and Sports Program (G.R.A.S.P.). Funding is to be provided from the Law Enforcement
Trust Fund (L.E.T.F.), from Project Numbers 690001, 690002, and 690003.
BACKGROUND
The Police Department is committed to educating the youth of our community in the dangers of
gang involvement. Towards this end, the Gang Reduction Activities and Sports Program
(G.R.A.S.P.) was established in October of 1995, with grant fiuids awarded by Miami -Dade
County. During the past four years, this program has served approximately seven hundred twenty
(720) at -risk children and has proven to be an effective juvenile prevention program by diverting
these kids from a life of crime and gangs and steering them to a more positive and rewarding
lifestyle. The program targets ex -gang and potential gang members within the City of Miami and
provides them with productive, alternative activities: Unfortunately, grant funding for this
program will end in September of this year. L.E.T.F. funding is being recommended for the
continuance of this successful program.
The Law Enforcement Trust Fund has contributed the required grant matching funds, in the
amount of $59,379, each year for the last two fiscal years. Before that, the general fund provided
the matching funds.
