HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-99-0316J-99-336 4/27/99 RESOLUTION NO. 9 9 0 316 A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION AUTHORIZING FUNDING OF THE CRIME PREVENTION PROGRAM, AND ALLOCATING FUNDS THEREFOR, IN AN AMOUNT NOT TO EXCEED $100,000, FROM THE LAW ENFORCEMENT TRUST FUND, PROJECT NUMBERS 690001, 690002, AND 690003, SUCH EXPENDITURES HAVING BEEN APPROVED BY THE CHIEF OF POLICE AS COMPLYING WITH THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF POLICE TREASURY'S "GUIDE TO EQUITABLE SHARING," AND FLORIDA STATE STATUTES, CHAPTER 932.7055, AS AMENDED. WHEREAS, the U.S. Department of the Treasury's "Guide to Equitable Sharing" and Florida State Statute 932.7055, as amended, authorize the expenditure of forfeiture cash or proceeds for certain law enforcement purposes not considered normal operating expenses; and WHEREAS, the Police Department supports the participation of citizens and community organizations in the prevention and detection of crime; and WHEREAS, Crime Prevention Program funding may be utilized to purchase equipment and provide financial support to in-house programs to assist with crime prevention efforts by the department and community; and WHEREAS, Police Department equipment purchases will be CITY COS UMON MEETBrC OF MAY 1 1 1999 Resolution No. 9 Q - 3I R %- 7 processed through established procurement procedures; and WHEREAS, funds for this expenditure have not been included in the Police Department's general operating budget; and WHEREAS, the Chief of Police has recommended adoption of this Resolution and has determined that the expenditures proposed comply with the U.S. Department of the Treasury's "Guide to Equitable Sharing" and Florida State Statutes Chapter 932.7055, as amended; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are hereby adopted by reference thereto and incorporated herein as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The funding for the Crime Prevention Program is hereby authorized, with funds therefor, in the amount not to exceed $100,000, hereby allocated from the Law Enforcement Trust Fund, Project Numbers G90001, G90002 and G90003, such expenditure having been approved by the Chief of Police as complying with the U.S. Department of the Treasury's "Guide to Equitable Sharing" and Florida State Statute Chapter 932.7055, as amended. Warshaw REFERENCES: Crime Prevention Program City Manager ENCLOSURES: RECOMMEDATION It is respectfully recommended that the City Commission adopt the attached Resolution authorizing funding, in the amount of $100,000.00, for the Crime Prevention Program. Funding is to be provided from the Law Enforcement Trust Fund, from Project Number 690001, 690002, and 690003. BACKGROUND The Miami Police Department encourages the citizens of the community to participate in the prevention and detection of crime. For this reason, the Police Department has supported community groups such as the Citizens Crime Watch, Youth Crime Watch, Model City Crime Prevention, Informed Families of Dade County, Kids for Peace, and other organizations devoted to the prevention of crime. Additionally, Crime Prevention Program funding will be utilized to purchase equipment and provide financial support to in-house programs not funded under the Police Department's general operating budget.
