HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-99-0303p., J-99-396 4/19/99 RESOLUTION NO. 9 303 A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION EXPRESSING ITS INTENT TO ENACT AN ORDINANCE IMPLEMENTING AMENDMENT III, PURSUANT TO PROPOSED FLORIDA STATUTE 196.075, GRANTING AN ADDITIONAL HOMESTEAD EXEMPTION FOR PERSONS 65 AND OLDER WHOSE HOUSEHOLD INCOME DOES NOT EXCEED A SPECIFIED AMOUNT. WHEREAS, the voters of Florida approved a constitutional amendment (Amendment III) which would allow local governments to grant additional homestead exemption to persons 65 and older whose household income does not exceed $20,000; and WHEREAS, the Miami City Commission is acutely aware of the real property tax burdens particular to its citizens who are 65 and older with incomes of $20,000 or less; and WHEREAS, the City Commission desires to enable its eligible citizens to receive the benefit of the tax relief set forth in Amendment III; and WHEREAS, the Legislature of the State of Florida has or will CTTy C0ar USSICK -TIN(; OF APR 2 7 9999 Resolution No, 99- 303 T" • enact Florida Statute 196.075, which implements Constitutional Amendment III; and WHEREAS, the Miami City Commission seeks to act expeditiously in the implementation of Amendment III; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are hereby adopted by reference thereto and incorporated herein as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The City Commission hereby expresses its intent to enact an ordinance implementing Amendment III, pursuant to proposed Florida Statute 196.075, granting an additional homestead exemption for persons 65 and older whose household income does not exceed a specified amount.
