HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-99-0176J-99-214 2/17/99 RESOLUTION NO. v 9 - 176 A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION AUTHORIZING THE FUNDING OF THE NEW HORIZONS OVERTOWN FAMILY ENRICHMENT CENTER YOUTH CAMp, IN AN AMOUNT NOT TO EXCEED $5,000; ALLOCATING FUNDS THEREFOR FROM THE LAW ENFORCEMENT TRUST FUND, PROJECT NUMBERS 690001, 690002, AND 690003, SUCH EXPENDITURE HAVING BEEN CERTIFIED BY THE CHIEF OF POLICE AS COMPLYING WITH THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF THE TREASURY'S "GUIDE TO EQUITABLE SHARING," AND FLORIDA STATUTE, SECTION 932.7055, AS AMENDED. WHEREAS, the U.S. Department of the Treasury's "Guide to Equitable Sharing" and Florida Statute 932.7055, as amended, authorize the expenditure of forfeited, cash or proceeds for certain law enforcement purposes not considered normal operating expenses; and WHEREAS, the Police Department is committed to the education and positive development of youth in Miami; and WHEREAS, the New Horizons Overtown Family Enrichment Center, in cooperation with the Overtown NET Service Center, Miami -Dade Housing Resident Development, the Non -Violence Organization, among others, sponsors two -week youth camps throughout the year; and WHEREAS, the camps provide youth with positive role models C127 CO on METING MR 2 3 1999 Resolution No. and present programs on job counseling, career development, drug awareness, prevention of teen pregnancy and involve youth in recreational and social activities; and WHEREAS, the Chief of Police recommends adoption of this Resolution and has certified that the proposed expenditures comply with the U.S. Department of Treasury's "Guide to Equitable Sharing" and Florida Statute, Section 932.7055, as amended; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are hereby adopted by reference thereto and incorporated herein as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. Funding for the New Horizons Overtown Family Enrichment Center Youth Camp in the amount of $5,000.00, is hereby authorized, with funds therefor allocated from the Law Enforcement Trust Fund, Project Numbers 690001, 690002,. and 690003, such expenditure having been certified by the Chief of Police as complying with the U.S. Department of Treasury's "Guide to Equitable Sharing" and Florida Statute, Section 932.7055, as amended. Funding is available from the Law Enforcement Trust Fund, Project Numbers 690001, 690002, and 690003, BACKGROUND The Police Department is committed to the education and development of the youth in our city. The New Horizons Overtown Family Enrichment Center will partner with several agencies including the Overtown NET Service Center, Miami -Dade Housing Resident Development, and the Non -Violence Organization to empower our youth with the resources and assistance necessary for life long success. The focus of the program is to provide youth with positive role models, and engage them in activities such as, job counseling, career development, drug awareness, teen pregnancy prevention, recreational, social and tutoring, therefore, decreasing juvenile criminal activities. The Youth Camps will operate during winter, spring and summer breaks. The winter and spring camps will operate for two week intervals, and summer camps for eight weeks.
