J-99-17 12/29/98 ,�p� i RESOLUTION NO. a1 t A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER TO APPLY FOR A HIGHWAY BEAUTIFICATION GRANT FROM THE STATE OF FLORIDA, DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION FOR THE PURPOSE OF SEEKING UP TO FIFTY PERCENT STATE FUNDING FOR LANDSCAPING A PORTION OF CORAL WAY, STATE ROAD NO. 972, AT APPROXIMATELY S.W. 34TH AVENUE, MIAMI, FLORIDA; FURTHER AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER TO EXECUTE THE NECESSARY DOCUMENTS, IN A FORM ACCEPTABLE TO THE CITY ATTORNEY, FOR THIS PURPOSE. WHEREAS, many roadside areas and strips abutting Florida Department of Transportation rights -of -way areas require maintenance to be esthetically and attractively landscaped; and WHEREAS, the City Commission desires that the City of Miami beautify and improve portions of Coral Way, State Road No. 972, within the City of Miami, Florida, with attractive landscaping; and WHEREAS, the City Commission of the City of Miami desires to authorize the City Manager to apply for a Highway Beautification Grant from the Florida Department of Transportation seeking up to fifty percent state funding to implement a landscaping plan; and WHEREAS, the owners of the Paseos Shopping Mall (Mall) have donated a landscaping plan, prepared by a landscape architect, ary comMUM MEETING OF JAN 1? 1999 xaeo►ufim No. for Coral Way at approximately SW 34 Avenue; and WHEREAS, in addition to the donation of the landscaping plan, the Mall owners have agreed to donate any additional funds necessary to complete the remaining landscaping project and have further agreed to perform all landscaping maintenance on the improvements; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are hereby adopted by reference thereto and incorporated herein as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The City Manager is hereby authorized to apply for a Highway Beautification Grant from the State of Florida, Department of Transportation for the purpose of seeking up to fifty percent State funding for landscaping a portion of Coral Way, State Road No. 972, at approximately S.W. 34th Avenue, Miami, Florida. Section 3. The City Manager is hereby authorizedll to execute the necessary documents, in a form acceptable to the City Attorney, for this purpose. Section 4. Warshaw City Manager RECOMMENDATION CAm2l DATE JAPE 4 1999' SUBJECT : RESOLUTION authorizing the city Manager to apply for a Highway REFERENCES :Beautification Grant ENCLOSURES: FILE It is respectfully recommended that the City Commission adopt the attached Resolution authorizing the City Manager to apply for a Highway Beautification Grant from the Florida Department of Transportation. BACKGROUND The owners of the Paseos shopping mall have expressed a desire to improve the median and parkway area of Coral Way at approximately SW 34 Avenue with landscaping, and have donated a landscaping plan, prepared by a Landscape Architect, for the project. Since Coral Way, State Road No. 972, is under the jurisdiction of the Florida Department of Transportation, funding for up to 50 percent of the cost of the project is available from the State of Florida Highway Beautification Grant program. The owners of Paseos have agreed to fund the remaining portions of the project and have agreed to perform all maintenance of the landscaping. The attached Resolution authorizes the City manager to apply for a Highway Beautification Grant with the Florida Department of Transportation for this project.
