BOUNDARIES
The Model City NET Service Area is located in Northwest Miami. It is
bounded generally North by NW 71 st Street, East by I-95 Expressway, Nest
by NW 17th Avenue and South by State Road 112.
SUB -NEIGHBORHOODS
The Model City NET Service Center encompasses the Edison Business
District, Edison Park, Ding Heights/Orchard Villa, Floral Park, Buena Vista
and Hadley Park residential neighborhoods.
DEMOGRAPHICS
a). approximately 35,000 persons
b). Ethnic Breakdown - Model City is a predominantly black
neighborhood. Nonhispanic Blacks comprise approximately 98% of the
population while nonhispanic white, hispanic and other comprise 2%.
c). According to the 1990 Census the median 1989 household income
was $13,292. Persons above poverty level was 14,156 and persons below
property level 10,968.
The Model City area contains significant diversity ineconomicstatus.
Residents of the Hadley Park and Buena Vista neighborhoods generally
possess higher income levels and do not exhibit the overall poor economic
conditions evident in other portions of the community.
MODEL CITY NET SERVICE CENTER
ACCOMPLISHMENTS
• Model City is an officially recognized "Weed and Seed" Site. Weed and Seed is
a multi -agency collaboration between the U.S. Attorney's office, FBI, DEA, ATF,
State and local law enforcement agencies as well as human service agencies.
Weed and Seed has the comprehensive objective of weeding out crime from
designated neighborhoods, moving in with a wide range of crime and drug
prevention programs, and then seeding the neighborhood with a comprehensive
range of human service programs that stimulate revitalization.
Inaugural Member - Weed and Seed Board of Directors.
• Monthly participant - Weed and Seed Crime Prevention Commission and
Subcommittees. Sponsored by Senator Kendrick Meek.
Organized Apartment Owners Association. This association is experiencing
continual growth and is doing positive things, particularly in the King
Heights/Orchard Villa neighborhood.
Participant in Neighborhood Homeowner Associations/Community meetings
where City Codes, Policies, etc., are shared and disseminated.
• Demolition of unsafe structures.
• On -going Code Enforcement Blitzes.
• Selected as one of four "Prototype" areas by the City Manager
• Model City Census Tract 19.01 designated Federal Empowerment Zone
• "Exterior Facade" program has brought improvements to buildings located on the
NW 7th Avenue "Business Corridor".
• Hosted 3rd Inner -City Youth Campout at Legion Park with over 500 participants.
• Several initiatives have been implemented in conjunction with Weed and Seed
Partners (Le, joint inspections, outreach programs, etc.)
• Hosted Liberty City Initiative AIDS Walk with approximately 200 participants.
• Annual thanksgiving turkey dinner baskets distributed to needy and under
privileged families.
• Annual christmas party held in recognition of elementary honor roll studens-from
area schools.
• Annual Miami -Dade Labor Day Parade/Festival hosted at Hadley Park
• "Reviving Our Community" Initiative. A crusade to restore the spiritual
foundation of the African -American community by preaching the Word of Gdd to
residents living in high crime, drug infested areas.
Numerous clean ups conducted throughout the community.

Model City NETGoals:
• To continue to dispel the negative perception of the neighborhood.
• To continue to successfully coordinate the delivery of City services.
• Improve the physical appearance of rsidential and nonresidential properties
through Code Enforcement with particular emphasis being placed on the
"Exterior Facade" Code.
• To improve community pride, awareness and resident Involvement by
continuously educating and keeping the community informed about City Codes,
Policies, etc. consequently improving the quality of life in the area.
• To facilitate the expedition of the demolition of unsafe structures and the
implementation of scattered site/infill housing.
• To continue to serve effectively as the liaison between the City Departments and
its residents.
• To continue to foster economic revitalization.

OPPORTUNITIES
Model City will continue to be a predominantly Black neighborhood,
possibly attracting moderate and middle income residents.
• To promote scattered/infill housing, consequently enhancing the tax rolls.
A portion of the Edison Business Corridor is located within the
Empowerment Zone which should create jobs in the area.
