Open claims as of 11/98 report Adjustments for: 5% supplemental (supplemental payments to permanently disabled employees) Permanent Impairment Benefits (benefits provided in lieu of wage loss benefits) Widow Benefits Attendant Care (benefit paid to family member for employees care) Closed claims New claims opened Open Claims Net Total Net Reduction in claims (8.6%) 2,794 (47) (12) (10) (4) (590) 424 2,555 { 239 It should be noted that included in the total open claims are the following types of claims which, by their nature, tend to be open for a long period of time: Permanently and Totally Disabled 111 Wage Loss 11 Temporary Totally Disabled (no longer a city employee) 18 Temporary Partially Disabled (no longer a city employee) 2 Heart Related Claims (Police) 226 Heart Related Claims (Fire) 97 Exposure Claims (Fire & Police) 78 Total 540 Risk Management is also reviewing an additional 180 claims files which have the potential of being closed. However, these files require more scrutiny due to their complexity. Total payments for workers compensation through May 31, 1999 amount to $6,461,778. � JAI sz -r T tr. Definitions Temporary Total Disability Healing period during which employee is totally disabled and cannot perform any work. Temporary Partial Disability Employee is capable of performing some type of work but has not reached maximum medical improvement and is earning less than 80% of his pre - injury wages. Permanent Total Disabili Employee is incapable of performing gainful employment. Wage Loss Benefit provided to injured workers whose injury occurred prior to Jan. 1, 1994 and whose earnings are less than their average weekly wage based on a formula. r U -1—
