A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION
EXPRESSING ITS INTENT TO CODESIGNATE
NORTHWEST 55TH STREET, BETWEEN 17TH AND 19TH
AVENUES, MIAMI, FLORIDA, AS MABLE DEAN BARLOW
STREET AND DIRECTING THE CITY MANAGER TO
INSTRUCT THE ADMINISTRATION TO INITIATE THE
FORMAL PROCESS FOR THE IMPLEMENTATION OF SAID
CODESIGNATION.
WHEREAS, Mable Dean Barlow, who recently passed away, was an
educator for sixty years, earning a teaching certificate in 1927;
WHEREAS, Ms. Barlow was a teacher of various subjects, an
assistant principal and a dean. of girls at Gifford High in
Gifford, Florida, and at Mays Elementary and Middle Schools in
Goulds, Florida; and
WHEREAS, for more than fifty years, Ms. Barlow financially
supported at least one college student a year; and

WHEREAS, she was very active in civic affairs and a member
of various civic organizations, including YMCA Neighbors Ladies,
Congress of Senior Citizens, Urban League, NAACP, American Legion
Auxiliary, National Council of Negro Women, National Black Child
Development, Inc., National Education Association and the
American Retired Teacher Association; and
WHEREAS, it is the desire of the City Commission, on behalf
of the City of Miami and its citizens, to express its deepest
gratitude by honoring the memory of Mable Dean Barlow for her
tireless civic activism by codesignating a street in her memory;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY
OF MIAMI, FLORIDA:
Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the
Preamble to this Resolution are hereby adopted by reference and
incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section.
Section 2. The City. Commission hereby expresses its
intent to codesignate Northwest 55th Street, between 17th and 19th
Avenues, Miami, Florida, as Mable Dean Barlow Street.
Section 3. The City Manager is hereby directed to
instruct the Administration to initiate the formal procedure for
implementing said codesignation.

Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective
immediately upon its adoption and signature of the Mayor.'/

If the Mayor does not sign this Resolution, it shall become effective at
the end of ten calendar days from the date it was passed and adopted.
If the Mayor vetoes this Resolution, it shall become effective
immediately upon override of the veto by the City Commission.
