HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-00-0967J-00-1009 10/26/00 RESOLUTION NO. 0 0 _ 9 6 9' A 'RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION URGING THE MIAMI STREET CODESIGNATION REVIEW COMMITTEE TO WORK DILIGENTLY WITH THE CITY MANAGER, THROUGH THE DEPARTMENT OF PLANNING, IN PROVIDING INPUT, AS PART OF A STUDY WHICH ALSO SHALL INCLUDE CONSULTATION WITH THE FAMILY OF THE LATE JOE LANG KERSHAW, SR., IN DETERMINING AN APPROPRIATE STREET LOCATION TO BE CODESIGNATED TO HONOR MR. KERSHAW; FURTHER DIRECTING THE CITY MANAGER TO PRESENT THE CITY COMMISSION WITH A RECOMMENDATION WITHIN 90 DAYS FOR SAID PURPOSE. WHEREAS, a critical concern of the African American community relates to the fact that streets have not been codesignated honoring African Americans; and WHEREAS, pursuant to Resolution No. 99-858, which extended condolences to the family of the late Joe Lang Kershaw, Sr., it was noted that Mr. Kershaw achieved national prominence as a Florida Legislator, being the first black African American to be elected to the Florida Legislature since reconstruction, and further recognized Mr. Kershaw's contributions in the areas of coaching, as lay leader in the Catholic Church, and his CITY COMMISSION MEETING OF 2 F 1? 300 . hesoi4abn No.. 00- 967 invaluable leadership qualities displayed during his distinguished career of public service; and WHEREAS, the late Joe Lang Kershaw, Sr. was recently saluted as one of the "FAMUans" of the Century for Homecoming 2000, for his extraordinary efforts as an educator whose commitment to excellence helps make Florida A&M University one of the nation's leading institutions of higher learning; and WHEREAS, the purpose of the City of Miami's Street Codesignation Review Committee is to review street codesignation requests and to make recommendations and guide the City Commission in its determination and deliberation regarding whether a street should be codesignated or a marker or plaza should be designated; and WHEREAS, prior to any review by the Miami Street Codesignation Review Committee, a request is normally received; however, in this instance, the City Commission requests that the Committee work in cooperation with the City Manager, through the Department of Planning, for the purpose of providing input to said study, which will assist the administration in making a recommendation to the City Commission, within ninety (90) days, after consulting with the family of the late Joe Lang Kershaw, Sr. regarding an appropriate street designation for Joe Lang Kershaw, Sr.; Page 2 of 4 00- 967 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are hereby adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The Miami Street Codesignation Review Committee is hereby urged to work diligently with the City Manager, through the Department of Planning, in providing input, as part of a study which also shall include consultation with the family of the late Joe Lang Kershaw, Sr., in determining an appropriate street location to be codesignated to honor Mr. Kershaw. Section 3. The City Manager is hereby directed to present the City Commission with a recommendation within 90 days for said purpose. Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption and signature of the Mayor.'/ 1� If the Mayor does not sign this Resolution, it shall become effective at the end of ten calendar days from the -date it was passed and adopted.
