Toys for Kids 2000 is in its third year and to date has benefitted more than two thousand under privileged kids from our community. This year's event will be our biggest yet with approximately seven. thousand people participating. This will translate into seven thousand toys for kids from not only our community but throughout Latin America as well. This year we have the Willy Chirino Foundation as a partner to not only enhance the visibility of our Miami event, but also to allow his. Foundation to take toys to children in some of the poorest areas in our neighboring Countries. Some of the other community-based Agencies participating will be the Latin American Motorcycle Association, The Village South, Catholic Charities, Children's Home Society, Community Crusade Against Drugs, The Miami Coalition For A Safe and Drug -Free Community, Brothers to the Rescue, and many others. On the morning of Sunday, December 10, 2000, about 7000 motorcycles will stage at the "Park and Ride" in North Miami. They will then proceed south on 1-95 to the Miami Orange Bowl where 1000 underprivileged kids and their parents will receive toys from Santa. He and Mrs. Santa will ride in on a bright red three wheeled motorcycle. We have meet with Chief Raul Martinez who has pledged the support of his Police Department in cooperation with Florida Highway Patrol and Miami Dade Police Department. CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA s INTER -OFFICE MEMORANDUM TO: The Honorable Mayor and Members of The City Commission BACKGROUND: DATE: OCT _Z MW SUBJECT: City Commission Agenda Meeting of October 12, 2000 REFERENCES: ENCLOSURES: FILE : Mr. James L. Gilliland, Director of Community Education for the Miami Coalition For a Safe and Drug -Free Community has requested a personal appearance before the City Commission on October 12, 2000. The organizers of the event have met with City staff, including Chief Raul Martinez who has pledged the support of the Police Department in cooperation with Florida Highway Patrol and Miami Dade Police Department. Toys for Kids 2000 will be a toy drive that will benefit more than five thousand under privileged kids from the community including the thirteen Net offices located within the City of Miami. This year the event will have as a partner the Williy Chirino Foundation, The Latin American Motorcycles Association, The Village South, Catholic Charities, Children's Home Society, Community Crusade Against Drugs, Brothers to the Rescue and many others. The organizers will request financial support for City services as it relates to in- kind assistance.
