HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-00-0371J-00-420 4/27/00 RESOLUTION NO. e 2 7 A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION DIRECTING THE CITY MANAGER TO IMPLEMENT, THROUGH THE CHIEF OF POLICE AND THE POLICE DEPARTMENT OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, A POLICY OF MAXIMUM TOLERANCE FOR THE - EXERCISE OF FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHTS DURING THE PEACEFUL DEMONSTRATIONS TO BE HELD.ON APRIL 29, 2000, IN THE LITTLE HAVANA COMMUNITY, BETWEEN 4TH AND 22ND AVENUES ON SOUTHWEST 8T11 STREET, MIAMI, FLORIDA. WHEREAS, many citizens of the City of Miami are organizing peaceful demonstrations to protest the events concerning Elian Gonzalez' `asylum plight to be held on Saturday, April 29, 2000, in the Little Havana Community, between 4th and 22nd Avenues on Southwest 8th Street, Miami, Florida; and WHEREAS, the City Commission wishes to assure that the Department of Police exercises a polify of maximum tolerance during the demonstrations as the community expresses its First Amendment Rights; V NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are hereby adopted by reference thereto and incorporated herein as if, fully set forth in this Section. The City Manager is hereby directed to implement, through the Chief of Police and the Police Department of the City of Miami, a policy of maximum tolerance for the exercise of First Amendment Rights during the peaceful demonstrations to be held on April 29, 2000, in the Little Havana community, between 4th and 22nd Avenues on Southwest 8th Street, Miami, Florida. Section 3. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption and signature of the Mayor.l� PASSED AND ADOPTED this 27th day of April 2000. If the Mayor vetoes this Resolution, it shall become effective immediately upon override of the veto by the City Commission. ENCLOSURES: City Clerk This purpose of this memorandum is to request of the City Attorney's Office to issue a new original of the above -referenced legislation. This Resolution was hand -delivered to the Mayor's Office on May 2; 2000 and signed for by an individual on the Mayor's staff, (see attached). All of the legislation from the April 27, 2000 meeting was returned with the exception of the aforementioned Resolution. In closing, it is respectfully requested that the City Attorney issue a new Resolution 00- 371 and submit it to our office. WF: amr
