F 3 A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION STRONGLY URGING THE UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF IMMIGRATION AND NATURALIZATION SERVICE, ATTORNEY GENERAL OF THE UNITED STATES JANET RENO, AND ANY .OTHER FEDERAL OFFICIALS TO GRANT ELIAN GONZALEZ DUE PROCESS OF LAW RELATED TO .A DETERMINATION OF CUSTODY WHICH YIELDS RESULTS THAT ARE IN THE BEST INTERESTS OF ELIAN GONZALEZ. WHEREAS, the mother of Elian Gonzalez lost her life in an effort to assure that he would be raised in a country where the rights of individuals are determined by due process of law; and WHEREAS, in order to assure that Elian Gonzalez will be afforded those rights upon which the foundation of this country was established, it is essential that he be provided due process of law; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are hereby adopted by reference CITV COMUSSION MEETING OF .APR 1 3 2000 Resolution No. thereto and incorporated herein as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The Miami City Commission hereby strongly urges the United States Department of Immigration and Naturalization Service, Attorney General of the United States Janet Reno, and any other federal officials deemed appropriate to grant Elian Gonzalez due process of law related to a determination of custody which yields results that are in the best interests of Elian Gonzalez. Section 3. The City Clerk is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to the United States Department of Immigration and Naturalization Service, Attorney General of the United States Janet Reno, and any other federal officials deemed appropriate for said purpose. Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption and signature of the Mayor". �i If the Mayor does not sign this Resolution, it shall become effective at the end of ten calendar days from the date it was passed and adopted. If the Mayor vetoes this Resolution, it shall become effective immediately upon override of the veto by the City Commission.
