City Manager ENCLOSURES: Grant
RECOMMENDATION
It is respectfully recommended that the City Commission adopt the attached Resolution accepting a
grant from the ESRI Livable Communities Grant program, with an estimated value of $3,500.
This grant program provides for software, training and materials along with technical support and
maintenance to enhance the Police Department's Geographical Information Systems (GIS).
BACKGROUND
The Police Department has been using Geographical Information Systems (GIS) technologies from
ESRI for several years. The Community Policing strategy led the department to re -invent itself
and totally re -asses every aspect of its operations. ArcInfo GIS tools were invaluable in the initial
evaluation of workloads, implementation and on-going refinement of the Community Policing
strategy. In an effort to increase the effectiveness of the Community Policing strategy, the
department started to manually disseminate information and maps to our thirteen Neighborhood
Enhancement Team (NET) service areas. This brought policing and government in general, to the
neighborhood level. By utilizing the latest ESRI software and allowing access from the thirteen
NET Offices, it is envisioned that Community Policing NET Commanders, investigators and patrol
officers will have access to data and maps depicting calls for service, crimes, arrests, hot spots, and
other law enforcement related items.
