A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION
EXPRESSING DEEPEST SYMPATHY AND SINCEREST
CONDOLENCES ON BEHALF OF THE CITY OF MIAMI
AND ITS CITIZENS TO THE FAMILY AND FRIENDS OF
DERRICK THOMAS, UPON HIS UNTIMELY DEATH.
WHEREAS, Derrick Thomas, a Miami resident who became a
successful National Football League athlete for the Kansas City
Chiefs and a well-known philanthropist in the Miami -Dade and
Kansas City areas, passed away on February 8, 2000, due to
injuries sustained in a tragic motor vehicle accident; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Thomas' generosity and involvement to help
others is memorialized by the success of his Third and Long
Foundation, an organization he founded and supported to promote
literacy among inner city youth and to provide scholarships for
students who wished to further their education in college; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Thomas was named 1993 National Football League
Man of the Year for his community efforts and honored in 1995
with the Bryon White Humanitarian Award for service to team,
community and country, which included organizing annual

charitable golf tournaments and Thanksgiving food drives and
collecting money from his teammates to raise money to assist the
less privileged and those in need; and
WHEREAS, on Saturday morning he could often be found reading
to children at local libraries, or bringing toys and stuffed
animals to children in local hospitals; and
WHEREAS, it is the desire of the City Commission, on behalf
of the City of Miami and its citizens, to express its deepest
sympathy to the family and friends of Derrick Thomas;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY
OF MIAMI, FLORIDA:
Section 1. On behalf of the citizens of the City of
Miami, the City Commission hereby conveys to the family and
friends of Derrick Thomas, its deepest sympathy and sincerest
condolences upon his untimely death.
Section 2. This Resolution shall become effective
immediately upon its adoption.

NET Office Appearances Before
the City Commission Meetings
As a result of the City Commission's request for more information as to what is occurring in our
NET Service Areas, beginning with the first City Commission meeting in May, individual NET
Administrators will be making presentations before the City Commission. These presentations
will keep you advised as to what activities the NET Service Centers are involved in to improve the
"Quality of Life" in their service areas.
Presentations will include the following:
■ Community activities, sponsored by or in association with the neighborhood centers
■ Volunteer programs, cleanups, and other programs to improve the "Quality of Life."
■ Summary of new development and re -development within the NET area.
In addition, the NET Administrators will periodically introduce new NET Service Area business
owners and residents for recognition. The programs will .not exceed more than 30 minutes to
include time allotted for questions from the dais.
