The 33rd Annual March of Dimes WalkAmerica is taking place on Saturday, April 6,
2002 at Peacock/Myers Park in Coconut Grove. We would like to request that members
of the March of Dimes WalkAmerica Steering Committee be placed on the December
20th agenda of the City Commission to formally request in-kind service and fee waivers
for the Park Department, Solid Waste, Police and Fire/Rescue Department, as well as
other issues related to the Walk. As you may be aware, no sale of any food or beverages
occurs during this fundraising event.
This Walk is considered the largest and most successful walk in Miami, and
approximately over 8,000 people attend every year. Subsequent to the unfortunate
incidents of September 11, many of our sponsors have either pulled out or curtailed their
contributions. We need the City of Miami's help to continue the March of Dimes
mission of saving the babies of our great community. The fiends collected with
WalkAmerica go towards the many programs and services the March of Dimes carries
out to insure that every baby has a healthy start in life. We are funding studies in areas
such as gene therapy and the prevention of premature labor. In Miami -Dade County, the
MomMobile, a mobile medical unit provides free medical care to low income pregnant
women.
We would be glad to answer any questions or meet with you prior to the meeting. I thank
you for your past support and anticipated positive response.

Who we are
Founded in 1938, the March of Dimes funds cutting-
edge research and innovative programs that has
saved millions of babies from death and disability.
But our work isn't done yet. As long as babies' lives
are threatened by prematurity and birth defects, the
March of Dimes will be there to fight for them.
What we do
The South Florida Chapter imagines a day when no baby is born sick or too
small or too soon. We want all babies to be born healthy; we're working to
realize this by ensuring that moms and babies here in South Florida get the
support services, the health coverage, and the health care they need and
deserve. Through materials and programs, we educate parents on the steps
they can take to have a healthy baby. A sampling is listed below:
Birth Defects Registry — A passive
state-wide surveillance system designed
to merge and analyze birth defects
information contained in existing
databases.
Chain Reaction — A youth -oriented
volunteer program that focuses on
developing leadership skills and the
March of Dimes mission.
Comenzando Bien — A Hispanic,
culturally and linguistically appropriate
prenatal education program that
includes eight educational seminars for
use in both worksite and community
settings.
Folic Acid Awareness—A public and
professional awareness campaign to
fight birth defects by urging all women
of childbearing age to take 400
micrograms of folic acid daily.
Insure Kids Now/KidCare — A
program that provides health insurance
to children who are presently
uninsured so they can receive check-
ups, vision and hearing testing,
immunizations, medications, and
hospital visits.
MOMmobile — A medical motor
coach, staffed by professionals, that
provides comprehensive quality
prenatal care at no cost to at -risk
women that otherwise might not
receive proper care.
Nursing Conference — An annual
conference designed to educate nurses
and midwives about perinatal issues
and to promote professional education.
Stork's Nest — In partnership with
the Zeta Phi Beta sorority, this
educational and incentive program
encourages pregnant women to get
early and adequate prenatal care.

Early in her fifth month of pregnancy,
Dorenda Washington began contractions
and was rushed to the hospital where
doctors told her that she was in premature
labor.
The doctors had to try to stop Dorenda's
labor or slow it down. She spent a month
upside down in a hospital bed, hoping
gravity would help. But it was only
temporarily successful, and Justin was born
four months premature, weighing only I
pound, 8-1/2 ounces.
Justin underwent intestinal, hernia, and
laser eye surgery, the last to correct a
detached retina resulting from the constant
administration of oxygen. He also suffered
from asthma, and a condition which results
from a temporary liver malfunction.
Justin was finally released from the hospital
four months later. He grew stronger and
healthier with each passing day, and today
he is a healthy little boy who seems to
have no residual effects from his ordeal.
Where we do it
In 2000, the Chapter funded a variety of grana to improve the health of babies in South
Florida. Funds were granted to local community groups to expand the reach and scope
of perinatal programs serving women of childbearing age. The amount of individual
grana varies, and supports a variety of programs that will serve as a catalyst for change.
A sampling is listed below:

Health/WIC Breastfeeding

staffed by peer counselors and consultants
to answer questions and to help increase
the duration of breastfeeding.
