BACKGROUND The Fire -Rescue personnel occasionally find themselves in hostile situations involving the use of firearms and other weapons. Demonstrations, riots, and sniper fire sometimes prevent our emergency responders from doing their jobs. In 1994, the Department of Fire -Rescue purchased 180 Survivor TM 2000 Series EMS Surveillance Vests manufactured by Armor Technology, Corporation. These garments are designed so as to protect firefighters from hazards encounters in the Emergency Medical Service industry that requires routine inspection and re -certification accordance to the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) Standard 0101.04, Ballistic Resistance of Personal Body Armor. To date, the initial five- year warranty on the ballistic panels has expired. The re -certification will allow the vest's warranty to be extended another six to seven years, and re -certification extends the warranty to a full 12 years from the original date of receipt of the unit. Failure to inspect and re -certify these ballistic vests will result to loss of product warranty and garments must be taken out of service. Since Armor Technology Corporation manufactured these ballistic vests, any extended warranty for inspection and re -certification will mandate and assure the product warranty be provided by Pinnacle Armor.
