A RESOLU'T'ION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION
SUPPORTING AND ENDORSING THE ELDER READY
COMMUNITY PROGRAM TO ASSURE THAT ELDERLY
PERSONS RECEIVE QUALa'TY CARE IN COMMUNITIES
WHICH ARE BARRIER FREE AND ENHANCE THE
QUALITY AND QUANTITY OF CARE OPTIONS FOR

WHEREAS, the City of Miami supports the Florida Department of
Elder Af.fai.-s' Init:iativc to make Florida Calder. Ready, so elders
can be independent as long as possible and r.ema.i.n in their homes
and in their cowanuni ties; and
WHEREAS, the State of Florida has the highest percentage of
elders of any state in the nation, and the elder population will
continue to increase, reaching riumbers without precedent in the
first part of the 2V": Century; and
WHEREAS, in order Lo allow elders Lo maintain dignity,
security and independence, comrnuni-ti.es must: evaluate, assess and
modify i.nfrastructureS to become Elder Ready; and
WHEREAS, the City of Miami and the Department of Elder
Affairs share the vision and responsibility to -ii.mprove the l.i f.e of

all Florida citizens, so they can prepare for: and enjoy aging in
place throughout their lives; and
WHEREAS, in order to achieve mutual goals, cities and
counties need to begin to build together a place frees of mobility
barriers;
NOW, 'THEREFORE, BE IT P.ESOLVED RY THE COMMI:SSTON OF THE CITY
OF MIAMI, FLORIDA:
Suction I The recitals and findings contained in the
Preamble to this Resolution are adopted by reference and
incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section.
Section 2. The Elder Ready Community Program to assure
that elderly persons recei.vo quality carer in communities which are
barrier free and enhance the quality and quantity of care options
for aging Floridians is supported and endorsed.
Section 3. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a copy
of this Resolution to Governor Jeb Bush, Florida Department of
Elder Affairs, Miami -Dade County Mayor Alex Penelas, all members
of the Board of County commissioners of Miami -Dade County,
Florida, Miami -Dade County Manager Steve Shiver, and the Mayors of
each of the municipalAt.ir_s of Miami. -Dade County.

Section 4. This Resol.ution small become effective
immediately upon its adoption and signature of the Mayor.-!'

I respectfully request that the City Commission consider a resolution supporting
the Eider Ready Community. The Elder Ready Commission is an initiative from
the Department of Elder Affairs to make Florida Elder Ready, so elders can be
independent as long as possible and remain in their homes in their communities.
Therefore, I respectfully request that a resolution supporting this initiative be
placed on the next City of Miami Commission meeting in September 13, 2001.

Sample Resolution
Whereas, -----supports the Department of Eder Affairs'
Initiative to make Florida Elder Ready, so elders can be
Independent as long as possible, and to remain in their
homes and in the communities they love; and
Whereas, the State of Florida has the highest percentage

population will continue to increase, reaching numbers
without precedent in the first part of the XXI Century; and
Whereas, in order to allow elders to maintain their dignity,
security and independence, communities must evaluate,
assess and modify their infrastructures to become
Elder Ready; and
Whereas, -and the Department of Elder Affairs share
the vision and responsibility to Improve the life of all Its citizens,
so they can prepare for and enjoy aging In place throughout
their life; and
Whereas, in order to achieve our mutual goals, cities and
counties should begin to build together a place free of
mobility barriers,
BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED that our community,
