William J. Faulkner Friends of Folklore, Inc. is charged to preserve this loncy and illustrious history. To fully appreciate this organization's history, it is important to reflect upon the man for whom this organization honors. Rev. Dr. William J. Faulkner born in 1892 was a master storyteller who spent his childhood listerting to and mentally recording the wonderful stories of a man, born as a slave, named uncle Simon Brown Uncle Simon Brown was a "free man" and worked on a small farm in Society Hill, South Carolina, owned and worked by Dr. Faulkner's mother. With joy, each day the boy, Willie Faulkner, took pride in carrying lunch to Uncle Simon, as it was his chore and his best opportunity to hear again and again his many stories. William Faulkner grew to be a God-fearing man, husband, father, preacher and scholar. At the end of a rewarding career, in his retirement, he devoted his time to writing down the stories learned in his youth from Uncle Simon Brown. These stories were later published in the book entitled "The Days When the Animals Talked." This book is filled with folkstories of resilient people. This book and a second entitled"Brer Tiger and the Big Wind" were published prior to his death in 1987 and are held in the repository of the Library of Congress and on display at the Smithsonian Institute. At the age of ninety-five William J. Faulkner died in Miami, Florida where his home still stands in the community of Overtown. He has left this organization and the world a wealth of folktales eager to be heard. In 1988 The daughter of the Rev, Dr. William J. Faulkner, Marie L. Brown and Jer -iah Nabawi, noted musical artist and storyteller collaborated to found and incorporate this organization as a non-profit 501(c)(3) as a tribute to the late master storyteller. Its members are strongly committed to its mission to preserve and perpetuate the African-American and Caribbean tradition of oral history. Over the past thirteen years this organization has provided venues and platforms for local storytellers to share their skill in telling a good story. It has also been aggressive in perpetuating this educational art form through public classroom presentations and dramatic presentations and storytelling. Faulkner Friends have sponsored annually: "Celebrations" a storytelling contest for youth of all ages, "Traditions" a youth creative writing publication, and The William J. Faulkner Symposia, a skills development forum for professional storytellers and for lovers of oral history, Last year Faulkner Friends, in partnership with Miami -Dade County Cultural Arts Division, brought noted musician and folklorist Oscar Brown, Jr. to the County's residents. In 1999 they collaborated with the AACCAC's Pan-African Bookfest and Cultural Conference in the re -opening of the historic Lyric Theater in the historic community of Overtown.
